What it's like to live in Gerrards Cross

Day to day, life here is easy if you like things close together. The shops, the library, the pharmacy, the gym and the cinema all sit in a tight cluster, so an afternoon of errands does not need much planning. Evenings are quiet. There are pubs and restaurants, but this is not a night-out town.

The flip side is cost and pace. Prices in the shops reflect the area, and there is a settled, established feel that some people love and others find a bit sleepy. If you want anonymity and non-stop activity, London is close, but Gerrards Cross itself is not that.

Getting around

The station is the big draw. Gerrards Cross station sits about 0.1 miles from the centre, putting you on the Chiltern line with services towards London and out towards Buckinghamshire and beyond. Denham Golf Club, Denham and Seer Green & Jordans stations are all within three miles if you want alternatives.

Buses run from stops right by the station and at The Packhorse, with more at Station Road Car Park and out at Chalfont St Peter Market Place. Services are useful for local hops to neighbouring villages, though as in most small towns they thin out in the evenings, so check timetables before you rely on them.

On foot, the town centre is genuinely walkable: shops, library, pharmacies and the cinema are all within half a mile of each other. Drivers have quick access to the main routes out towards London and the M40 corridor, and parking around the station and centre is a known pressure point at commuter times.

Schools and family life

Families are well covered locally. The Gerrards Cross School is just 0.4 miles away, with St Joseph's Primary School under a mile and Chalfont St Peter Academy and Chalfont St Peter Infant School within a couple of miles. Gayhurst School Trust is also close by. For secondary, St Mary's School is 0.4 miles from the centre; families often look further afield in Buckinghamshire too, so check catchments and admissions before you commit.

Across the wider Buckinghamshire area, 19.7% of residents are under 16, a touch above the England figure of 18.6%. It is a county where family life is well established, and that shows in the number of clubs and community groups.

For weekends, Latchmoor Pond, Austenwood Common, Goldhill Common and Bulstrode Park all give you space for a run-around. Gerrards Cross Community Library is 0.2 miles from the centre, and the Guide Hall, Colston Hall and the Gerrards Cross Community Association all host local activities.

Things to do

For a town of this size, Gerrards Cross punches above its weight. Everyman Gerrards Cross puts a proper cinema on the doorstep, and there is a second screen at Jordans Picture House a couple of miles out. Eating and drinking is covered by places like The Journeyman, Jack and Alice, Thai Rack and The Bull Hotel.

For exercise, Anytime Fitness is in the centre, with BOUNCE Gerrards Cross, The Fit House and Chalfont St Peter Cricket Club all within a mile or so. FitSteps with Rosie runs nearby too, and the commons are good for walking and running without paying for anything.

Nightlife is limited and that is the honest truth. The Bull Hotel is the main option locally, with Winkers Nightclub about 1.6 miles away. Most people who want a big night head into London by train. If you prefer a quiet pint, a film and a long walk at the weekend, this suits you well.

Work and the local economy

Buckinghamshire is a working county. Across the wider council area, 61.6% of adults are in work, above the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment sits at 2.8% against 3.5% for England. Benefit claimant numbers are also lower here, at around 3% of working-age people compared with 4% nationally.

Gerrards Cross itself is a commuter town more than an employment centre. The station is the reason many people live here, with London reachable by train and the motorway network close for drivers. Local jobs tend to be in shops, hospitality, schools, care and health services, plus the small businesses along the centre.

If you work shifts or unsocial hours, think carefully about transport. Train and bus timetables shape your options, and a car makes early starts and late finishes much easier. For hybrid or office-based workers with a London employer, the location is close to ideal.

Housing and who lives here

This is an owner-occupied town in an owner-occupied county. Across Buckinghamshire, 70% of homes are owned outright or with a mortgage, 15.7% are privately rented and 13% are social rented, below the England figure of 17.1%. Only 2.6% is council-owned, with 10.3% held by housing associations.
