What it's like to live in Staines-upon-Thames

Day to day, most errands are close. Iceland, Lidl, a Tesco Express and Poundland are all within a few minutes of the centre, along with Boots and several independent pharmacies. The Staines Library Hub is right in the middle of town and does room hire as well as books.

Buses are easy to pick up. There are stops at Staines Bridge, on the High Street and at the railway station itself, which helps if you don't drive or don't want to pay for parking in town.

By car, the M25 is close and Heathrow is a short hop, which is a real plus for shift work and a real headache at rush hour. On foot, the centre is flat and compact, and the riverside paths make walking pleasant rather than just practical. For older children, The Magna Carta School is around 0.6 miles away and The Matthew Arnold School about 1.2 miles, with St James Senior Boys School a little further at 2.6 miles. Check the latest inspection reports and admissions rules yourself before a swap, as catchments and places change year to year.

For family life outside school, the Memorial Gardens, Birch Green and Lammas Park are all short walks, and Staines Moor gives you proper open space. Staines Community Centre and The Hythe Centre run local activities, and the library hub is a useful free indoor option on wet days. Across Spelthorne, 18.9% of residents are under 16, slightly above the England figure.

Things to do

For a town of this size, there is plenty. Vue Cinema Staines is right in the centre, with Everyman Egham 1.6 miles away if you fancy something different. Pubs and bars are thick on the ground near the river, including The George, London Stone and Rivers Inn, plus Turtle Bay and Nostrano Lounge for eating out.

If you train, PureGym Staines, Rebel Gym and CrossFit Staines are all within walking distance of the centre, along with smaller personal training studios.

The outdoor side is the part people underrate. The Wraysbury River path leads out to Staines Moor, which feels surprisingly wild for somewhere this close to Heathrow, and the Papa India Memorial and the Lammas Park bandstand are quiet spots worth knowing. Between the two shopping centres and the retail park, a rainy Saturday is easily filled without leaving town.

Work and the local economy

Spelthorne is a working borough. Around 61.8% of adults are in work, above the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment sits at about 3.6%, close to the national average. Claimant figures for unemployment-related benefits were 3.6% of 16 to 64 year olds, slightly below England's 4%.

Heathrow's proximity shapes a lot of local employment, and Terminal 5 is under three miles away, so airport and airport-related shift work is a realistic option if that suits you. The town centre itself brings retail, hospitality and office jobs.

If you are job hunting or retraining, the Spelthorne Jobs and Skills Hub is right in the town centre, which is handy if you are moving into the area without local contacts. Rail links towards London also make commuting out practical, though season tickets are not cheap, so factor that into your budget before deciding a swap works financially.

Housing and who lives here

Housing here is dominated by owner occupiers. Across Spelthorne, 68.1% of homes are owned and 17.9% are privately rented, while social renting accounts for just 12.7%, below the England figure of 17.1%. Most of that is housing association stock: 10.8% housing association against only 1.8% council.
