What it's like to live in Caldicot

For families, the school choice is one of Caldicot's strongest cards. Castle Park Primary is practically in the middle of town, with Dewstow Primary, Durand Primary and Welsh-medium Ysgol Gymraeg Y Ffin all within half a mile, and The Archbishop Rowan Williams Church in Wales Primary School about a mile out.

Caldicot school, the secondary, is barely a quarter of a mile from the centre, so many teenagers can walk. Having primary and secondary so close together takes a lot of stress out of the morning routine.

Beyond school, there is a settled network of groups: 2nd Caldicot Scouts Hut, Girlguiding Caldicot District, St Mary's Church Hall, and Portskewett Church Hall and Recreation Hall a mile away. Across Monmouthshire, under-16s make up 15.8% of residents, slightly below the England figure.

Caldicot has its own station, about half a mile from the centre, and Severn Tunnel Junction is a little over a mile away. Having two stations in a town this size is unusual and useful, whether you are commuting or visiting family further afield.

For buses, there are stops and small interchanges at Eastgate Crescent and Old Portskewett Post Office, both about a mile and a half out, with Tudor Court around three miles away. It is worth checking timetables for your own journey before you commit, as service levels vary.

If you drive, the town's position near the Severn crossings opens up work and family visits on both sides of the border. On foot, the tight cluster of shops, schools and parks near the centre means plenty of short trips are walkable.

Green space is easy to come by. King George V Playing Fields, Hall Park, the Country Park and the Ornamental Lake are all within half a mile of the centre, and Caldicot Community Garden adds a more sociable, hands-in-the-soil option.

For exercise indoors, Caldicot Leisure Centre is the main hub, with smaller independents nearby including Monmouthshire Biomechanics, Shredz City and ARW Fitness. The library is a free, warm place to spend time, which is worth saying out loud.

The pub scene is decent for the size of the town: The Cross Inn, The Castle Inn, The Measure, The Haywain and The Dragonfly are all a short walk or stroll apart. It is the sort of place where a quiet pint is the main evening event, rather than late nights out.

Across the Monmouthshire council area, 54.7% of adults are in work, a little below the England figure of 57.4%, while unemployment is lower at 2.2% against 3.5%. Unemployment-related benefit claims stood at 2.3% of 16 to 64-year-olds in August 2026, again below the England average of 4%.

That points to a fairly steady local labour market, though the wider area skews older: 29.6% of residents are 45 to 64 and 25.9% are 65 or over.

Many people here look beyond the town for work, and the two railway stations plus the road links towards the Severn crossings make that realistic. If you are job-hunting, it is worth mapping your likely commute before you decide.

Social housing is a smaller slice of the market here than in England as a whole. Across Monmouthshire, 14% of homes are socially rented, split between 3.6% council and 10.4% housing association, compared with 17.1% nationally. Owner-occupation is high at 71.9%, with 13.6% privately rented.

In practice that means social tenancies in and around Caldicot are prized and do not come up often, which is exactly why a mutual exchange can be the most realistic route in.

The age profile of the wider area is older than the England average, with fewer people aged 25 to 44. Expect a mixed, settled community rather than a fast-churning one, and neighbours who have often been in their homes a long while.
