What it's like to live in Chepstow

There's a decent spread of primary schools close to the centre. The Dell Primary School is only a couple of hundred metres away, with St Mary's R C Primary School, Offa's Mead Academy and Pembroke Primary all within three quarters of a mile, and Tutshill C of E Primary about a mile out.

For older children, Wyedean School and Sixth Form Centre is under a mile away, so secondary years don't necessarily mean a long journey.

For days out with children, Bulwark Park, Hardwick Recreation Ground and Castle Dell are all close by, and Chepstow Library is in the centre.

One thing to weigh up: across the wider Monmouthshire council area, under-16s make up 15.8% of the population against 18.6% for England, so it skews a little older than average.

Chepstow has its own train station a short walk from the centre, which is a genuine advantage for a town this size and useful if you don't drive.

Buses are easy to pick up. Chepstow Bus Station is right in the middle of town, with further stops at Tesco, the railway station and Wyebank Avenue over towards Sedbury.

On foot, the centre is very manageable. Shops, the library, pharmacies and several parks all sit within half a mile of each other, so plenty of errands can be done without a car.

If you do drive, the town's position near the Severn crossings makes trips towards Bristol and the wider region straightforward, though it's worth checking journey times at peak hours before you commit.

For a town of this size, Chepstow is well served for somewhere to sit down with friends. The George Hotel, The Lion and the Queen's Head Micropub are all in the centre, with Pontio Lounge and the Funky Duck Pub and Restaurant close by.

Green space is the real draw. Castle Dell and the Chepstow castle community orchard sit by the castle, and Chepstow Riverside gives you the Wye on your doorstep.

There's a community side to the town too, with the Palmer Community Centre, The Green Room, the Rainbow Centre and Chepstow Art Space, plus halls at Sedbury and Beachley and Sedbury Space just over the border.

For exercise there are several small gyms and personal training studios, and an outdoor cinema runs about a mile from the centre.

Across the wider Monmouthshire council area, 54.7% of adults are in work, a little below the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment is low at 2.2% against 3.5% for England, and benefit claimants stood at 2.3% of working-age people in August 2026, compared with 4% nationally.

Part of that picture is the age profile. Across the council area, 25.9% of residents are 65 or over, well above the England share, so fewer people are in work simply because more have retired.

In practice, many working households here look beyond the town. The train station and the road links towards the Severn crossings make commuting realistic, which is worth factoring in if your job won't move with you.

Monmouthshire is a strongly owner-occupied area. Across the council area 71.9% of homes are owned outright or with a mortgage, and only 14% are social rented, below the England figure of 17.1%. Of that, 10.4% is housing association and just 3.6% council.

That matters for swappers. Social housing is a smaller slice of the market here than in many places, so suitable matches can take patience rather than turning up overnight.

The age mix reflects the ownership picture too: across the council area 29.6% of residents are 45 to 64 and 20.6% are 25 to 44, so it's a settled, older population overall rather than a fast-changing one.
