What it's like to live in Flint

Housing in the wider Flintshire area leans heavily towards ownership: 71.8% of homes are owner-occupied, 13.2% privately rented and 14.5% social rented, split between 10.4% council and 4.1% housing association. That social rented share is below the England average of 17.1%, so council and housing association homes are in demand and swaps matter.

The age profile tilts older than England overall. Across Flintshire, 28.1% are aged 45 to 64 and 21.4% are 65 or over, with fewer people in their twenties and thirties. In practice that means settled streets and long-standing neighbours rather than high turnover.

Flint's own housing is a mix of older terraced streets near the centre and post-war estates spreading out towards the parks and hills. Homes are generally more affordable than across the border, and the town's compact layout means most of it stays close to the shops and station.

Families are well served for choice within walking distance. Ysgol Gwynedd Primary School and Ysgol Pen Coch are both around a third of a mile away, with St Mary's Catholic Primary School and Cornist Park School under a mile. Ysgol Merllyn sits a little further out at under two miles.

For older children, Flint High School and St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School are both within three quarters of a mile, and Ysgol Maes Hyfryd is nearby too. Connah's Quay High School is about three miles away. Having secondaries this close means most teenagers can walk or take a short bus ride rather than a long commute.

Across the wider Flintshire area, 17.6% of residents are under 16, a touch below the England figure, and Welsh-medium and English-medium schooling sit side by side. Cornist Park, Pen Goch Hill and Wern Park give children somewhere to burn off energy without a drive.

Flint station is about a fifth of a mile from the town centre, on the North Wales coast line. That is a real asset if you do not drive, or if someone in the house works or studies away from the town. Having a station you can walk to, rather than drive to, changes what is possible.

Buses run from stops in the centre, with the Swan Hotel stop closest and further stops at Papermill Lane and towards Bagillt. Services connect Flint with nearby Deeside towns, though as anywhere in north Wales, check evening and Sunday times before you rely on them.

By car, Flint is well placed for the A55 and the wider Deeside area, with Chester and the English border a short drive east. On foot, the flat centre means most everyday errands, the library, the schools and the retail park are genuinely walkable. It is one of those towns where a car is useful but not essential.

For a town this size, Flint is unusually well stocked for fitness. Jade Jones Pavilion, Flint Fitness Suite, Flex Strength Gym, Revolution fitness studio and Fervid Fitness are all within a couple of hundred metres of each other in the centre, so there is real choice on price and style.

Outdoors, Cornist Park and Pen Goch Hill are the main local green spaces, both close to the centre, with Wern Park and Bagillt Community Garden a short trip away. The estuary setting gives the town wide skies and long views, which regulars will tell you is half the appeal.

Otherwise it is a pub-and-community town. The Mill Tavern, The Dee and the George & Dragon cover the local drinking, and Flint Castle Hotel is the main option for a night out. Flint Library and the community halls at Cilfan, Bagillt and Halkyn host much of what happens locally. For bigger nights out, people head to Chester.

Employment across the Flintshire council area holds up well. Some 57.9% of adults are in work, slightly above the England figure, and unemployment sits at 2.8% against 3.5% for England. Unemployment-related benefit claims were 3% of 16 to 64 year olds in August 2026, below the England figure of 4%.

Flintshire is one of the stronger job markets in Wales, with the Deeside industrial area a short drive or bus ride east and manufacturing a long-standing part of the local economy. Flint itself offers retail and service work around the town centre and Flintshire Retail Park, plus schools, care and the leisure sector.

The train helps here too. With the station in walking distance, commuting east towards Chester or along the coast is practical without a car. That widens your options considerably if the local job market is not where your skills sit.
