What it's like to live in St Andrews
St Andrews is a small coastal university town in north east Fife, home to around 16,460 people. It feels historic and compact, with old stone streets, a big student presence and the sea never far away. It suits people who want a walkable town with real character. The New Picture House cinema and the green space at Bow Butts are both close to the centre.
"I'd move here" adds St Andrews to the areas on your listing, so homes here are matched to you first.
St Andrews sits on the east coast of Fife, looking out over the North Sea. It is a town of about 16,460 people, with Dundee across the Tay to the north and Fife's bigger towns such as Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes to the south west. Edinburgh is reachable for day trips and work via Fife's road and rail network.
What draws people here is the combination of a small town and a famous one. The university shapes much of the place, bringing libraries, culture and a steady flow of visitors. The coast and the golf links are the other big pull.
For social tenants, St Andrews is a tightly held place. Homes do not come up often, and that is worth knowing before you set your heart on it. People who do move here tend to stay. If you want a coastal town where you can do most of your week on foot, and you are patient about waiting for the right swap, it is well worth putting on your list.

The social rented share is almost identical to Scotland's 23.1%. In St Andrews itself, private renting is heavily shaped by the student population, which makes social tenancies all the more valuable.

St Andrews itself skews younger in term time because of the students, but the permanent residential streets feel more settled and mixed than the town centre first suggests.

What is it like to live in St Andrews?
Day to day, most things sit within a short walk. There is an M&S Foodhall, an Aldi and a Morrisons for the bigger shop, a Boots pharmacy in the middle of town and a second pharmacy at Morrisons. St Andrews Community Hospital is about a mile out.
Green space is scattered through the town rather than in one big park: St Mary's Quad, St John's Garden, Sallie's Lawn, Bow Butts and Spider Park are all within half a mile. The town is busier in term time and quieter in summer, which some people love and others find takes adjusting to.
What are the schools and family life like in St Andrews?
Families have a decent choice of primary schools close by. Canongate Primary School is about 0.7 miles from the centre, Lawhead Primary School about 1.3 miles, and Greyfriars RC Primary School roughly half a mile for Catholic education. St Leonards School sits closest of all at 0.3 miles. For secondary, Madras College is around a mile away and is the town's state secondary.
There is plenty for children outside school. Spider Park and Bow Butts are both within a third of a mile, and St Andrews Library is right in the centre, which makes rainy days easier.
Community life is active too. The 51 Club, Holy Trinity Church Hall, Victory Memorial Hall and the Cosmos Centre all sit within a short walk, and the 8th Fife Scout Group is based nearby. St Andrews Community Hospital is under a mile out. Across the wider Fife council area, 15.8% of residents are under 16, the same as Scotland overall.

How do you get around St Andrews?
St Andrews has no railway station of its own. The town is served by St Andrews Bus Station, about a third of a mile from the centre, which is the main link to the rest of Fife, to Dundee and to Edinburgh. If you rely on public transport, the bus station will be a big part of your routine, so it is worth checking the routes and times for your own journeys before you commit.
By car, you are on the Fife coast with roads running inland towards the A91 and the wider Fife network. Parking in the historic streets can be tight, as it is in most old towns.
Walking is where St Andrews really works. The schools, libraries, supermarkets, pharmacy, cinema and parks listed here are nearly all within a mile of the town centre, and many within half a mile. Plenty of residents manage without a car, though that depends on where you work and where family lives.

What is there to do in St Andrews?
For a town of this size, St Andrews is well served. The New Picture House cinema is a couple of hundred metres from the centre, and there is a decent spread of pubs and bars including the Criterion, the Cross Keys Bar, The Rule, The Central Bar and Aikmans, all clustered within a few minutes' walk. Club 601 covers later nights.
Libraries are a genuine strength. St Andrews Library and the King James Library are both right in town, with the University of St Andrews Library, Martyrs Kirk Research Library and the J F Allen Library all within half a mile.
For exercise and fresh air, The Malt Barn and SALT are the local gyms, and the parks at St Mary's Quad, St John's Garden, Sallie's Lawn, Bow Butts and Spider Park give you a range of green spots rather than one big one. The coast itself is the other draw, and it costs nothing.

What is work and the local economy like in St Andrews?
Employment figures here cover the wider Fife council area rather than St Andrews alone. The employment rate for 16 to 64 year olds is 72.2%, a little below the Scottish figure of 74.6%. Unemployment stands at 4.8% against 4% for Scotland, and 3.3% of working age residents were claiming unemployment-related benefits in September 2026, close to the Scottish rate of 3.2%.
In St Andrews itself, the university is the dominant presence and shapes a lot of local work, alongside the shops, hospitality and tourism that come with a visitor town. St Andrews Community Hospital is another local employer.
If your work is outside the town, plan around the bus station or the roads, because there is no train from St Andrews. Dundee and the larger Fife towns are within commuting range for many people, though journey times vary. Worth pricing up before you swap, especially if you would be travelling daily.
Figures are for the Fife council area, Annual Population Survey (Jul 2025-Jun 2026) and claimant count.
Is St Andrews a good place for social housing tenants?
If St Andrews appeals, the practical step is to get your own home listed. A clear, honest advert with good photos and a straight description of the rooms, garden, parking and any adaptations does more than anything else to attract the right match.
Add St Andrews to your desired areas so you appear in searches from tenants here, and consider adding nearby parts of Fife too. Homes in a small town like this come up less often than in bigger places, so widening your net slightly can speed things up without taking you far from the coast.
Be honest about what you need: school catchment, ground floor access, a safe spot for a car, or being close to the bus station. The more specific you are, the fewer wasted viewings. Then keep your listing active and reply quickly when someone gets in touch. Swaps often come together when both sides want to move at the same time.
