More about living in Melton Mowbray
Getting around
Melton Mowbray station is about 0.4 miles from the town centre, which makes car-free living genuinely workable here. For a small town, having your own railway station is a real asset, and it is close enough to walk to with a bag.
Buses call at stops by the rail station and near Aldi, roughly a quarter to half a mile from the centre, with other stops further out towards the edges of town. Services in a town this size are more limited than in a city, so it is worth checking timetables for the routes you would actually use before you commit to a swap.
On foot, the centre is compact and flat in the main shopping streets, with supermarkets, pharmacies, the library and the cinema all clustered within a few hundred metres. If you drive, parking and the road network out towards Leicester and Nottingham make it easy to reach work or family further afield. Plenty of households here run a car, but you would not be stranded without one.
Schools and family life
Families have a decent spread of primary schools close in. The Grove Primary School is about 0.2 miles from the centre, with St Francis Catholic Primary School and Brownlow Primary School both around half a mile, plus Sherard Primary School and Swallowdale Primary School within a mile. Check current places and Ofsted reports directly, as these change.
For older children, Long Field Academy is roughly 0.6 miles away, Birch Wood Vale School at Ashton House about a mile, and Melton Vale Sixth Form College just over a mile, so teenagers can often walk or take a short bus ride rather than travel out of town.
The practical family stuff is handy too. Melton Mowbray Library sits in the centre and offers Family Hub support, and there is the Fairmead Children and Families Wellbeing Centre under a mile away. St Marys Birth Centre and Melton Mowbray Hospital are both around half a mile out. Add three parks within a short walk and you have a town that works well with a pushchair.
Things to do
For a town of this size, Melton Mowbray punches above its weight for evenings out. The Regal Cinema is right in the centre, with The Star a short walk away, and there are bars such as Tubes and Jackson's nearby if you want a night out without travelling.
Pubs are plentiful and close in, including The White Lion Hotel, The Kettleby Cross and The Half Moon Inn, all within a few minutes of the middle. Gyms are unusually well represented too, with Jubilee Sports, Primal Fitness, GoodLife Gym, The Steel Yard and Bodyworx all within a couple of hundred metres of the centre.
Daytime, the parks do a lot of the work. Memorial Gardens is the gentler option, while Wilton Park, New Park and Leicester Road Sports Ground give you room to run about, kick a ball or walk the dog. Community life runs through places like the Melton Mowbray Lions Community Hub, Mary's Place and St John's Church Hall, which is where you tend to find groups and activities once you have settled.
Work and the local economy
Melton is a working area. Across the wider council area, 59.3% of adults are in work, a shade above the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment is low at 2.1% against 3.5% nationally. Unemployment-related benefit claims stood at 2.8% of 16 to 64 year olds in August 2026, compared with 4% across England.
That tells you two things. Jobs are around, but a tight labour market can also mean competition for homes and a slower rental market. The town centre itself supports plenty of retail, hospitality and care roles, with supermarkets, pubs, gyms and health services all clustered within walking distance.
For anything the town cannot offer, the railway station and the road links matter. Many people here commute out to larger Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire employers and come home to a quieter town. If your work is shift-based or depends on a particular bus route, check the timings carefully before swapping, as evening services in a town this size can be thin.
Housing and who lives here
The wider Melton area is dominated by home ownership: 70.9% of homes are owned, 17.2% are privately rented and just 10.7% are social rented, split between council at 7.3% and housing association at 3.4%. That is well below the England average of 17.1% social rented, so social homes here are in demand.
Melton Borough Council is by far the biggest social landlord with around 1,785 homes. EMH Housing and Regeneration has about 312, Nottingham Community Housing Association 258, Platform Housing 227 and Paragon Asra Housing 122. Average weekly social rents in the area for 2024/25 were about £83 for a one bed, £101 for two beds and £107 for three beds.
At 31 March 2025 there were 588 households on the council's housing register, with 258 social homes let through the council during 2024-25 and 13 council homes swapped by mutual exchange. A register is not a simple queue, but those figures show why exchange is worth taking seriously as a way to move here.
