Hinckley: a walkable market town with everything close by

There is a good spread of primary schools close in. St Marys C of E Primary is practically on the doorstep at 0.1 miles, with St Peters Catholic Primary, Westfield Infant School, Westfield County Junior School and Hinckley Parks Primary all within about half a mile.

For older children, Hastings High School and Redmoor Academy are both under a mile. Dorothy Goodman School and Aurora Charnwood School serve pupils with additional needs, and Progression House is also nearby, which is worth knowing if your child needs specialist support.

Hinckley Library sits in the centre and runs Family Hub support, so there is somewhere to go for advice as well as books. Green Towers Hinckley Club 4 Young People, about 0.8 miles out, is aimed at older children and teenagers.

Hinckley is built for walking. Most of what you need is inside half a mile of the centre, which cuts bus fares out of the weekly budget.

When you do need to travel, the bus stands on Regent Street are right in the middle of town, with The Crescent bus station just around the corner. Hinckley train station is about 0.4 miles from the centre, an easy walk with a buggy or shopping.

That combination of a station plus a town-centre bus station is better than a lot of towns this size manage. It makes commuting or visiting family realistic without running a car, though as always check the specific routes and times you'd need before you commit to a swap.

Parks are one of Hinckley's strong points. The Mead and Argents Mead are right by the centre, with the War Memorial gardens, Granville Road Park and the larger Hollycroft Park all within a third of a mile. Free days out with the kids, no bus fare needed.

Cineworld is in the town centre, which is unusual for a town this size and saves a trip to a bigger city. Hinckley Leisure Centre is close by, alongside smaller gyms and studios including Snap Fitness, Gymophobics and cheerleading classes.

For shopping and pottering about there's the Britannia Shopping Centre, Hansom Court and The Crescent, plus charity and vintage shops. Pubs and bars are clustered in the middle, with Electric Chapel for a night out. Community halls include St Mary's, the Mary Forryan Centre and St Francis.

Across Leicestershire, 58.6% of adults are in work, slightly above the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment sits at 2.5% compared with 3.5% nationally, and in August 2026 just 2.3% of working-age people were claiming unemployment-related benefits, against 4% for England.

That points to a reasonably steady local job market by national standards. It doesn't guarantee anything for your own line of work, but it is a better backdrop than many places.

The train station and bus links also widen your options, since you are not limited to jobs you can walk to. If you're moving for work, look at the specific routes and journey times first.

Leicestershire is a county of homeowners. Across the authority area, 73.4% of homes are owned outright or with a mortgage, 15% are privately rented and only 10.5% are social rented — well below the England figure of 17.1%. Council and housing association homes are split almost evenly.

The practical meaning for you is simple: social housing is a smaller slice of the market here, so swaps come up less often than in a big city. Patience helps.

The age profile leans a little older than England overall, with 20.8% aged 65 and over and 17.6% under 16. It feels like a settled, family-and-retirement sort of place rather than a young, transient one.
