What it's like to live in Hinckley

Leicestershire has a high rate of home ownership. Across the county, 73.4% of homes are owned outright or on a mortgage, 15% are privately rented and just 10.5% are socially rented, split almost evenly between council and housing association. That is well below the England figure of 17.1%.

In plain terms, social housing here is a smaller slice of the market than in many parts of the country, so swaps can take patience. It is worth being flexible on which part of town you would consider.

The county skews a little older than England as a whole, with 20.8% aged 65 and over and 27% aged 45 to 64. Around 17.6% are under 16, so there are still plenty of families about, particularly near the town's schools.

There is a good choice of primary schools close to the centre. St Marys C of E Primary is right on the doorstep, with St Peters Catholic Primary, Westfield Infant, Westfield County Junior and Hinckley Parks Primary all within around half a mile.

For older children, Hastings High School and Redmoor Academy are both under a mile away, with Aurora Charnwood School, Progression House and Dorothy Goodman School also in town. Check current Ofsted reports and admission areas before you commit to a swap, as catchments change.

Family extras are easy to reach. Hinckley Library offers Family Hub support, and Green Towers Hinckley Club 4 Young People, St Francis Community Centre and the Mary Forryan Centre give younger people and parents places to go. The Mead, Argents Mead, Granville Road Park and Hollycroft Park cover everything from a quick run-around to a proper afternoon out.

Hinckley has its own train station, about a ten-minute walk from the centre, which makes travelling without a car realistic rather than a struggle.

Buses are even closer in. Regent Street stops sit right in the heart of town, and The Crescent bus station is a couple of minutes away, so you can pick up a service without a long walk beforehand.

On foot, the town centre is the real winner. Schools, parks, the library, health services and five supermarkets all fall within half a mile or so of the middle. If you drive, you get easy reach of the wider county and the Warwickshire border, but plenty of households here manage without a car.

For a town of this size, Hinckley is well served. Cineworld sits in the middle of town, and Electric Chapel covers later nights out if that is your thing.

Pubs and bars are plentiful and central, including Crafty Baron, Flames, The Junction 18, The Clarence Bar and Don Fenticas. You can walk between most of them.

If you want to keep active, Hinckley Leisure Centre is a few minutes from the centre, with Snap Fitness, Re Fitness Studios, Gymophobics and TKT Cheerleading nearby. Add four parks within walking distance, two libraries in town and Burbage Community Library a mile and a half out, and there is enough to fill weekends without spending much.

Hinckley sits in Leicestershire, where the wider picture is positive. Across the county, 58.6% of adults are in work, slightly above the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment is 2.5% against 3.5% nationally.

Benefit claims reflect that too. In August 2026, 2.3% of 16 to 64 year olds in Leicestershire were claiming unemployment-related benefits, compared with 4% across England.

Locally, the town centre itself is a source of jobs through its shops, shopping centres, pubs and health services, including Hinckley and District Hospital and the Community Diagnostic Centre. The train station also makes commuting out of town a practical option, whether that is for work or study.
