Market Bosworth: a small Leicestershire town, honestly reviewed

For a town this size, the school picture is unusually good. St Peter's CE Primary Academy is around half a mile away, with Barlestone C of E Primary School under two miles and Newbold Verdon Primary School about two and a half. CoachUnlimited and The Dixie Grammar School also sit in the town.

Secondary matters too, and here you do not have far to go. The Market Bosworth School and The Dixie Grammar School are both about a tenth of a mile from the centre, so older children can walk to school rather than rely on a bus.

Market Bosworth Community Library is right in town, and Barlestone Community Centre is under two miles away for groups and activities.

Be honest with yourself about transport before you commit. The nearest bus station listed is Methodist Chapel, about 2.5 miles away at Barlestone, which is not a walk most people would fancy with shopping or a pushchair.

Inside the town itself, walking works well. Schools, the library, the pharmacy, the Co-op, the parks and the pubs are all clustered within roughly half a mile, so a car-free day in Market Bosworth is perfectly doable.

It is trips out of town that need planning. If your work, family or hospital appointments are elsewhere, check the actual journey and timings carefully before you swap. Rural Leicestershire rewards people with a car, and stretches those without one.

Green space is the best thing on offer. Market Bosworth Country Park is roughly a third of a mile out, with Bow Pool inside it, and there is a Garden of Remembrance closer still. Barton Road Playing Fields, just over half a mile away, is handy for kids burning off energy, and Walkies at Osbaston is about a mile and a half on.

Pubs are well covered. The Dixie Arms is in the town, Bosworth Hall Hotel and Spa is a short stroll, and The Gate Hangs Well, The Royal Arms Hotel and Hercules Revived are all within a couple of miles.

For exercise indoors there is Spindles Health Club and Gym and the facilities at Bosworth Hall, both close by.

Across Leicestershire, 58.6% of adults are in work, slightly above the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment sits at 2.5% compared with 3.5% nationally, and in August 2026 just 2.3% of 16 to 64 year olds claimed unemployment-related benefits, against 4% for England.

So the wider county has a reasonably strong jobs picture. What we cannot tell you is where the work is in Market Bosworth itself, beyond the shop, pubs, hotel and schools you can see in the town.

Realistically, many people here will travel out to work. If you rely on public transport, line up a job and a journey before you move rather than after.

Leicestershire is a county of homeowners. Across the local authority area, 73.4% of homes are owned outright or with a mortgage, 15% are privately rented, and only 10.5% are social rented, split roughly evenly between council and housing association. That is well below the England figure of 17.1%.

In practice that means social housing here is thin on the ground, and exchanges come up less often than in a city. Patience matters.

The age profile leans older: 20.8% of county residents are 65 or over compared with 18.4% nationally, and slightly fewer are under 16. Expect a settled, quieter feel rather than a young, fast-changing one.
