What it's like to live in Desborough

Families are well served for primary schooling. Havelock Infant School and Havelock Junior School are both about 0.2 miles from the centre, with Loatlands Primary School a little further at 0.4 miles. Over in Rothwell, Rothwell Junior School and Rothwell Victoria Infant School are around a mile and a half away. Always check current places and Ofsted reports yourself, as these things change.

Green space is one of Desborough's quiet strengths. Desborough Recreation Ground, Millennium Green, Desborough Pocket Park and Dr Henry Gibbons Garden are all within a couple of hundred metres or so of the centre, along with the War Memorial.

For indoor options there is Desborough Library on the doorstep, plus Marlow House and Saint Giles Community Centre nearby for groups and activities.

Buses are the main public transport option in town. There are stops at Desborough, Adj Station Road and at Brooke Close, with more over in Rothwell at the War Memorial, about a mile and a half away. Check the routes and timetables carefully against your own commute or school run before you commit, because a small town service can be very different from a city one.

If you drive, Desborough's position in North Northamptonshire puts Rothwell and Market Harborough within a short trip, and parking in a town this size is usually less of a battle than in a city.

On foot, the centre is compact. The library, shops, pharmacies and several parks all sit within roughly half a mile of each other, which makes a car-free day genuinely doable.

Desborough Leisure Centre is the main spot for swimming, classes or a workout, less than half a mile out. Montsaye Community Sports Centre is about a mile and a bit away, and there are smaller outfits including Mum & Me Fitness for something less formal.

For an evening out, The R Inn Hotel, Desborough Services Club and The Old Works are all in the centre. Rothwell adds The Red Lion and the Rowell Charter Inn if you fancy a change of scene.

Beyond that, a lot of local life runs through the community centres and the parks. Rothwell Community Centre and Rothwell Library widen the choice a little. This is not a town with endless nightlife, and if that matters to you, be honest with yourself about it before you swap.

Across the wider North Northamptonshire council area, 61.8% of adults are in work, above the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment sits at 2.7%, below the 3.5% England average, and unemployment-related benefit claims in August 2026 were 3.4% of 16 to 64 year olds against 4% nationally.

That paints a reasonably steady employment picture for the area as a whole, though it does not tell you where the jobs are. Many people in a town this size travel out to work, so it is worth mapping your own journey by car or bus before you decide.

If you work from home, the compact centre and the library nearby make for a decent base.

Across North Northamptonshire, 15.2% of homes are social rented, split roughly evenly between council and housing association, slightly below the England figure of 17.1%. Two thirds of homes are owned outright or with a mortgage, and 18.4% are privately rented, so social housing is a smaller share here than in many towns.

Average weekly social rents in the council area for 2024/25 were £92 for a one bed, £107 for a two bed and £114 for a three bed. The biggest landlords are North Northamptonshire Council with just over 8,000 homes, followed by Greatwell Homes, Amplius Living, Orbit and Paragon Asra.

The age mix across the area closely mirrors England, with 19.4% under 16 and 18.2% aged 65 and over, so you get a genuine spread of ages rather than one dominant group.
