More about living in Walton-on-Thames
What it's like to live in Walton-on-Thames
The make-up of the wider Elmbridge area tells you a lot. Just over one in five residents is under 16 and 28.3% are aged 45 to 64, both above the England average, while there are fewer young adults. It feels settled rather than buzzy.
Day to day, most errands are walkable if you live near the centre: supermarkets, chemists, the library and a handful of pubs including The Walton Village, The Regent and the George Inn. Further out, the town spreads into quieter residential roads where you will lean more on buses or a car.
Getting around
Walton-on-Thames station is about 0.9 miles from the town centre, on the main line towards London. It is a walk of 15 to 20 minutes, or a short bus or car trip. Hersham station is 1.4 miles away and Shepperton 1.5 miles, so you have options if one line suits your journey better.
Buses run from stops right in the High Street, with Hepworth Way and Church Street stops all within a few hundred metres of the centre. That covers local trips to Hersham, Weybridge and the surrounding villages reasonably well, though evening and Sunday services in this part of Surrey are thinner than in London.
Driving is straightforward and most homes here have parking of some kind, but the High Street and the Heart car parks get busy at weekends. On foot, the central streets are flat and easy, and the riverside paths make for a pleasant walk rather than just a route.
Schools and family life
There is a good spread of schools close by. Grovelands Primary and Walton Oak Primary & Nursery are both about 0.8 miles out, with Cleves School at a mile and Bell Farm Primary at 1.2 miles. For secondary, Heathside Walton-on-Thames is under a mile away and Thamesmead School and Halliford School are both around 1.2 miles. Walton Leigh School, a special school, is 1.1 miles away. Check current admissions and Ofsted reports yourself, as catchments shift.
For days out of the house, Elmgrove Recreation Ground is 0.3 miles away, with Ashley Park Recreational Area and Riverside Park both around 0.4 miles. Walton Library is right in the centre, and Hersham and Shepperton libraries are within a mile and a half.
Community life is decent too: St Erconwalds, Walton Community Centre and Cromwell Community Centre are all within a short walk or bus ride, and Walton Community Hospital is 0.6 miles out.
Things to do
For a town of this size, Walton punches above its weight. Everyman Walton puts a cinema in the middle of the High Street, and the Heart Shopping Centre keeps the retail side alive when plenty of similar towns have lost theirs. The Hersham Green Shopping Centre and The Courtyard are both under two miles if you fancy a change.
Pubs are close at hand rather than numerous: The Walton Village, The Regent, Ruby's and the George Inn are all within a few hundred metres of each other. Nightlife proper is limited here, so for a bigger night out most people head towards Sunbury, Hampton or into London by train.
If you like being active, there is plenty of choice within walking distance, including PureGym Walton-on-Thames, The Method Gym and Threesixtygym. Add the riverside walks and recreation grounds and it is an easy place to get outdoors without planning a trip.
Work and the local economy
Work in this corner of Surrey is in decent shape. In the wider Elmbridge area, 61.6% of adults are in work, above the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment sits at 2.8% against 3.5% nationally. Benefit claimants related to unemployment were 2.5% of working-age people in August 2026, compared with 4% across England.
Locally, the jobs you will see most are in retail and services around the High Street and the Heart, plus care, health, schools and hospitality. The Swan Sanctuary, Napier House and Walton Community Hospital are all nearby, and the surrounding towns of Weybridge, Esher and Shepperton add more.
Plenty of residents commute, which is part of the appeal: the train gives you access to London and to jobs along the line without living in the city. Factor in season ticket costs if you are weighing up a move, because they add up quickly.
Housing and who lives here
Elmbridge is an owner-occupier area first and foremost: 71.3% of homes are owned, 17.5% are privately rented and only 10.1% are socially rented, split between 1.7% council and 8.4% housing association. That is well below the England average of 17.1%, so social tenancies here are valued and people tend to hold onto them.
Paragon Asra Housing is by far the biggest social landlord in the area with around 4,877 homes, followed by A2Dominion South, Southern Housing, The Whiteley Homes Trust and Metropolitan Housing Trust. Average weekly social rents in 2024/25 were about £129 for a one bed, £154 for two and £177 for three.
For context on demand, Elmbridge's housing register held 2,395 households at the end of March 2025 and 149 social homes were let through the council in 2024-25. A register is not a simple queue, but it does show why a swap is often the more practical route.
