More about living in Weybridge
Getting around
Weybridge station is about 0.7 miles from the town centre, with Addlestone a mile or so away and Walton-on-Thames, Shepperton and Byfleet & New Haw all within three miles. That gives you a few options if one line is disrupted, and it means you can live here without a car if you plan around the timetable.
Buses stop at The Ship Hotel right in the centre and at stops by the station, linking the town with neighbouring Elmbridge places. Services are useful rather than constant, so check the routes you would actually need before you commit.
On foot, the centre is compact. Shops, pharmacies, the library and the health centre cluster within half a mile of each other, and the towpaths along the River Wey & Godalming Navigations make pleasant walking and cycling away from traffic. Drivers get easy reach of the wider Surrey road network, though parking in the centre takes patience at busy times.
Schools and family life
Families are well catered for. St Charles Borromeo Catholic Primary is barely a tenth of a mile from the centre, with Manby Lodge Infant School and St James C of E Primary both about half a mile away, and Oatlands School around a mile. Darley Dene Primary & Nursery sits 1.3 miles out towards Addlestone.
For older children, Heathside School is about 0.6 miles away and River Wey is within a mile. Walton Leigh School, which supports pupils with additional needs, and Halliford School are both around 1.4 miles. Always check current admission areas with Surrey County Council, as catchments shift.
The wider Elmbridge area skews young in family terms: 21.4% of residents are under 16, above the England figure of 18.6%. That shows in the parks. Churchfields Recreation Ground and Churchfields Meadow are within a short walk, Oatlands Park Recreation Ground is under a mile, and Riverside Weybridge gives you water and open grass in one trip.
Things to do
For a town this size, there is plenty within reach. Weybridge Library Hub doubles as a space you can hire, and Weybridge Centre for the Community sits right in the middle of town, with Oatlands Village Hall and Weybridge Guide Hall nearby for clubs and groups.
Eating and drinking is mostly independent places near the centre, including Valentina, Osso Buco, El Meson De Los Hermanos and No 39 Bar, plus the Best Western Ship Hotel. For a night out with more going on, Runnymede Jazz Club is about 1.3 miles away and the Iveagh Lounge a little over two.
Cinemas are easy: The Light at Addlestone is 1.3 miles, and Everyman Walton about two. Shopping stretches from The Courtyard just down the road to The Heart Shopping Centre in Walton. Gyms include Totum Fitness in the centre and the Wey Centre, and the river towpaths are free whenever you fancy them.
Work and the local economy
Elmbridge is a working area. Around 61.6% of adults are in work, above the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment sits at 2.8% against 3.5% nationally. Benefit claimants related to unemployment were 2.5% of 16 to 64 year olds in August 2026, compared with 4% across England.
A lot of that work happens elsewhere. Weybridge is a commuter town, and many residents travel by train towards London, Woking or Guildford. If you are moving for a job, check the journey at the time you would actually do it, not just the fastest off-peak service.
Locally, jobs tend to be in shops, hospitality, schools, care and health services, with the high street, the supermarkets and the health centre among the visible employers. Pay in the area is generally good, but so are living costs, so weigh both sides before you decide.
Housing and who lives here
Social renting is a small slice of Weybridge and the wider Elmbridge area: 10.1% of homes, split between 1.7% council and 8.4% housing association. Owner occupation dominates at 71.3%, with 17.5% private rented. Paragon Asra Housing is by far the biggest social landlord locally with 4,877 homes, followed by A2Dominion South, Southern Housing, The Whiteley Homes Trust and Metropolitan Housing Trust.
Average weekly social rents in the council area for 2024/25 were about £129 for a one bed, £154 for two and £177 for three. That is affordable compared with anything else on the market here, which is part of why turnover is low.
To put the demand in context, 2,395 households were on Elmbridge's housing register at 31 March 2025 and 149 social homes were let through the council in 2024-25. A register is not a simple queue, but the numbers explain why so many people reach Weybridge through a swap instead.
