What it's like to live in Port Talbot
Port Talbot is a working coastal town in Neath Port Talbot, south Wales, with a compact centre of around 5,756 people and the sea and hills close at hand. It suits people who want town life without big-city prices or distance, and it has Aberavon Park and the Aberafan Shopping Centre almost on the doorstep.
"I'd move here" adds Port Talbot to the areas on your listing, so homes here are matched to you first.
Port Talbot sits on the South Wales coast in the county borough of Neath Port Talbot, between Swansea Bay and the hills of the Afan valley. Neath is its nearest neighbour inland, with Swansea a short run west and Bridgend and Cardiff east along the M4 corridor.
People move here for the combination of a proper town centre, a mainline railway station and quick road links, all within a small area. The town itself is modest in size at around 5,756 residents, but it serves a much wider council area of over 142,000 people, so the facilities on offer are bigger than the population alone suggests.
For tenants considering a swap, the appeal is practical. Shops, a hospital, schools, libraries and parks are clustered tightly together, and the coast and valleys are both easy to get to. It is not a polished tourist town, and it does not pretend to be. It is a place where everyday life is straightforward and nothing much is far away.

By road, the M4 runs past the town, which is why so many people here commute to Swansea, Bridgend or further east. Parking around the centre is a normal town-centre affair rather than a nightmare. On foot, the centre is flat and compact, and most of the shops, the library, the bus station and the train station sit within a few hundred metres of each other, which is handy on days when the weather off the sea is doing its worst.

What is work and the local economy like in Port Talbot?
Port Talbot has long been an industrial town, and much of the work in the area is tied to industry, services and the public sector, including Neath Port Talbot Hospital less than a mile from the centre.
The figures for the wider Neath Port Talbot council area show a softer labour market than the England average. Around 50.5% of adults are in work, compared with 57.4% across England. Unemployment is recorded at 2.8%, below the England figure of 3.5%, and unemployment-related benefit claimants stood at 3.2% of 16 to 64 year olds in September 2026, against 4% in England. The gap is partly explained by an older population: 21.2% of residents are 65 or over.
What that means in practice is that plenty of people here look beyond the town for work. The Parkway station and the M4 make Swansea, Bridgend and Cardiff realistic commutes, so if your job or job hunting takes you out of town, the links are there.
Figures are for the Neath Port Talbot council area, Census 2021 and ONS claimant count.
How safe is Port Talbot?
Like every town centre, Port Talbot has police incidents logged each month. In August 2026 there were 223 within about a mile of the centre, made up of:
- Anti-social behaviour reports63
- Vehicle crime3
- Bicycle theft3
- Shoplifting16
- Other theft11
- Theft from the person2
Source: data.police.uk street-level crime. Counts cover a fixed one-mile radius around the centre, so busy high streets and stations always record far more than the residential streets around them, and most incidents are minor. Compare like with like: a similar-sized town centre, not a village.
Is Port Talbot a good place for social housing tenants?
If Port Talbot looks like the right fit, the next step is simple. Put your own home on Mutual Home Exchange with clear photos and an honest description, and add Port Talbot as one of your desired areas so tenants here can find you.
It helps to be specific. Say which part of town would suit you, whether you need to be near one of the local primary or secondary schools, and how close you want to be to the bus station or Port Talbot Parkway. Mention the practical things too: bedrooms, floor level, garden, parking, and anything about adaptations or access. The more a potential swapper can picture your home, the more likely they are to get in touch.
Keep your listing up to date and reply to messages promptly, even when the answer is no. Consider widening your search to Baglan, Taibach or Cwmafan if the right match doesn't appear straight away. Exchanges can take time, but a clear, well-kept listing is the thing that gets you noticed.
