What it's like to live in Adlington

Families are well served for primary schools. Anderton Primary School is barely a minute away, with Adlington St Pauls Church of England Primary and Anderton St Joseph's Catholic Primary both about two-tenths of a mile off. Adlington Primary School is just over half a mile, and Rivington Foundation Primary sits 1.3 miles out in the countryside.

For secondary, everything is a short journey rather than a walk. Holy Cross Catholic High School is 1.9 miles, Albany High School 2 miles and Rivington and Blackrod High School 2.1 miles. Shaftesbury and Southlands are both under three.

Jubilee Recreation Ground is close by for running about, and Adlington Community Centre is a third of a mile away. Adlington Library is handy for reading groups and a warm, free place to sit.

The railway station is the big advantage here. Adlington station is about a four-minute walk from the middle of town, with Blackrod just over two miles away and Chorley under three. If you do not drive, that makes travel for work, appointments or seeing family far more manageable than in many small towns.

Bus stops sit right by the railway station, with more at Marley Court just over a mile away and at Blackrod rail station. It is a modest network rather than a frequent city service, so check the exact times for the journeys you make most.

Within the town itself, walking works well. Schools, shops, pubs and the library are all clustered within half a mile of each other.

The countryside is the main event. Rivington Reservoirs are just over a mile away and Rivington Arboretum a little further, giving you miles of walking and water views without needing a car. The Myles Standish Commemorative Garden and Rivington Village Hall are in the same direction.

In town, the pubs are the social hub. The Elephant and Castle, The Spinners Arms Hotel and The Old Post Office are all within a few minutes' walk, with Retreat Adlington nearby.

For a bigger night or a film, Chorley and Horwich are close. Reel Cinema Chorley and the Pavillion Cinema are both under three miles, and there are several gyms and fitness studios in that same ring, including Jays Gym and Prime Gym. Market Walk in Chorley covers the larger shops.

Adlington itself is small, so most people travel out for work, and the train station makes that realistic. Chorley, Blackrod and Horwich are all within a short hop, with local shops, pubs, schools and care roles making up much of the employment closer to home.

Across Lancashire, 55% of adults are in work, a little below the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment stands at 2.9%, lower than the 3.5% national figure, and 3.6% of 16 to 64 year olds were claiming unemployment-related benefits in August 2026, again below the England rate of 4%.

These numbers cover the whole county rather than Adlington, but they suggest a steady rather than struggling local job market.

Housing here is mostly a mix of older terraces and family houses, and social rented homes are not thick on the ground. Across Lancashire only 12.3% of homes are socially rented, below the 17.1% England figure, split between 3.7% council and 8.7% housing association. Owner-occupation is high at 68.2%.

That matters for swappers. It means fewer social tenancies to exchange into, so patience and a wide search radius help.

The age profile for the county leans slightly older than England overall, with 20.7% aged 65 and over against 18.4% nationally, and a slightly smaller share of 25 to 44 year olds. In practice Adlington feels settled, with plenty of long-term residents alongside families using the primary schools.
