What it's like to live in Cheadle, Staffordshire

Cheadle is a small market town of around 12,000 people in the Staffordshire Moorlands, the quieter, greener corner of Staffordshire. It suits people who want a settled, low-key town where daily life happens in one place rather than a city. Two supermarkets, a library, a hospital and Tean Road Recreation Ground all sit within a short stroll of the centre.

1 council and housing association home is available to swap within 3 miles of Cheadle, and 1,017 households are on the Staffordshire Moorlands council waiting list (31 March 2025).

"I'd move here" adds Cheadle to the areas on your listing, so homes here are matched to you first.

Cheadle sits in the Staffordshire Moorlands district of Staffordshire, in the West Midlands region, with the ST10 postcode covering the town and the villages around it. Smaller settlements such as Tean, Kingsley and Oakamoor lie within a few miles, and the surrounding area is rural rather than built up.

People move here for the trade-off a small town offers: a full set of everyday services in walking distance of most of the town, with open country on the doorstep. With roughly 12,000 residents, Cheadle is big enough to have supermarkets, schools and a hospital of its own, but small enough that you will start recognising faces.

It is also a practical choice for households who want space and calm without cutting themselves off. Social rents across the wider Staffordshire Moorlands area are modest compared with many parts of England, and the district has a noticeably older, more settled population than the national average. If you are swapping out of a busy city estate, the change of pace is the main thing you will notice.

Swapping to Cheadle: key facts

Can I swap my council or housing association home to Cheadle?

Yes, if you are already a council or housing association tenant. Mutual exchange means swapping homes with another social tenant, so it does not depend on the council waiting list: you need a tenant in or near Cheadle who wants your area, and both landlords must agree. What is housing like in Cheadle and who lives there?

Cheadle sits in a district where home ownership dominates. Across Staffordshire Moorlands, 78.2% of homes are owned outright or on a mortgage, 12.7% are privately rented and just 8.6% are social rented, half the England figure of 17.1%. Council housing makes up only 2.5% of homes, with housing associations at 6.1%, so social tenancies here are relatively scarce and worth holding onto.

The biggest social landlord by far is Your Housing Limited with around 2,780 homes in the district, followed by Honeycomb Group with 408, Sanctuary Housing Association with 332, Housing 21 with 98 and The Wrekin Housing Group with 73.

Average weekly social rents for 2025/26 in the council area are about £99 for a one bed, £106 for a two bed and £116 for a three bed. The population skews older than England as a whole: 29.6% are aged 45 to 64 and 26.2% are 65 or over, with 15.6% under 16. At 31 March 2025 there were 1,017 households on the council's housing register, and 109 social homes were let through the council in 2024-25.

That is roughly 9.3 households waiting for every social home let in a year. Mutual exchange doesn't use the waiting list: if you already have a council or housing association home, swapping with another tenant can be a quicker way to move to Cheadle.

A register counts households who have applied, so it isn't a simple queue: some are already social tenants hoping to transfer, and people can be on more than one council's list.

What is it like to live in Cheadle?

The centre is compact and old-fashioned in a good way. Asda, Morrisons and the Penny Lane Shopping Mall are all within a couple of hundred metres of each other, with Aldi a little further out at under a mile. Pharmacies are easy to find, with Ratcliffes and Boots in town and J C Ratcliffe close by, and Cheadle Hospital is only a few minutes away.

Green space is never far. Millbrook Open Space, Arundel Playing Field and Wedgwood Open Space all sit within half a mile or so, with Wentlows Playing Fields under two miles out. Cheadle Library is a short walk from the shops. Away from the middle, streets get quieter quickly and the countryside takes over.

What are the schools and family life like in Cheadle?

Families are well served for schools. Within a short walk of the centre you have St Giles' Catholic Primary School and Cheadle Primary School, both about a tenth of a mile out, with Bishop Rawle Church of England Primary School just over a quarter of a mile away. St. Chad's School is 1.3 miles out and St Thomas' Catholic Primary School sits a little over two miles away.

For older children, Painsley Catholic College and The Cheadle Academy are both under half a mile from the town centre, and Moorlands Sixth Form College is close by for post-16 study. Draycott Moor College lies under three miles out. Having secondary schools this close means teenagers can often walk or take a short bus ride rather than travel out of town.

For younger children, the playing fields and open spaces are the main draw: Arundel Playing Field, Millbrook Open Space and Wedgwood Open Space are all within easy reach, and Cheadle Library is a useful free stop on a wet afternoon.

How do you get around Cheadle?

Cheadle works best on foot if you live near the centre. The shops, library, hospital, pharmacies and several schools are all within half a mile of each other, so plenty of daily errands can be done without a car at all. Tean Road Recreation Ground is barely a few minutes from the middle of town.

The railway picture is the honest weak point. The nearest stations within three miles are Foxfield Colliery, Kingsley & Froghall and Dilhorne Park, and none of them is a mainline commuter station. If you need regular train travel, plan on driving or taking a bus to a bigger station elsewhere.

That makes road links and buses the main way of getting further afield. Buses serve the town and surrounding villages, though services in a rural district like this are thinner in the evenings and on Sundays than in a city, so check the timetable for your own journey before you commit. Many households here run a car, and parking is generally easier than in larger towns.

What is there to do in Cheadle?

Cheadle's leisure is local rather than flashy. Tean Road Recreation Ground is the closest green space to the centre, with Millbrook Open Space, Arundel Playing Field and Wedgwood Open Space all within about half a mile and Wentlows Playing Fields under two miles out. Between them there is plenty of room for dog walking, football and letting children run about.

The pub scene is traditional and within walking distance. The Lamplighter, The Bird in the Hand, the Queen's Arms, Bar 19 and Cheadle Conservative Club are all in or around the town centre, so a night out does not mean a taxi home.

For shopping and browsing, Penny Lane Shopping Mall sits in the middle of town alongside the supermarkets. Cheadle Library is a short walk away. Community life leans on local halls: Cheadle Masonic Hall is in town, with Kingsley Village Hall and Oakamoor Village Hall serving the villages a few miles out. If you want big-city culture, you will be travelling for it.

What is work and the local economy like in Cheadle?

Employment figures below cover the wider Staffordshire Moorlands council area rather than Cheadle alone. In that area, 55.7% of adults are in work, just under the England figure of 57.4%, while unemployment is low at 2% against 3.5% nationally. Unemployment-related benefit claims stood at 2.2% of working-age residents in September 2026, well below the England figure of 4%.

That mix tells you something useful. Work is steady here, but the overall employment rate is pulled down a little by an older population, with 26.2% of the district aged 65 and over. Fewer people are chasing jobs, and fewer are out of work.

In practice, many Cheadle residents work locally in shops, schools, health and care, or commute out by car to larger towns and cities nearby. If your job depends on public transport, be realistic about the limited rail options and check bus times for your shift pattern before you decide. For drivers, the range of places within commuting distance is considerably wider.

How safe is Cheadle?

Like every town centre, Cheadle has police incidents logged each month. In August 2026 there were 92 within about a mile of the centre, made up of:

Anti-social behaviour reports31
Vehicle crime1
Other theft6
Criminal damage3
Burglary6
Public order11

Source: data.police.uk street-level crime. Counts cover a fixed one-mile radius around the centre, so busy high streets and stations always record far more than the residential streets around them, and most incidents are minor. Compare like with like: a similar-sized town centre, not a village.

Is Cheadle a good place for social housing tenants?

Right now: 1 home to swap within 3 miles of Cheadle.

If Cheadle sounds like your kind of place, a mutual exchange is a realistic route in. With social homes making up under a tenth of housing across the district, swapping is often the most practical way for a council or housing association tenant to move here.

List your own home on Mutual Home Exchange and set Cheadle, or the ST10 area, as a place you want to move to. Write your advert as you would want to read one: the number of bedrooms, the floor or garden, the heating, parking, and what is good about the area you are leaving. Clear photos make a real difference to how many people get in touch.

Then be patient and stay open. Adding nearby villages such as Tean, Kingsley or Oakamoor to your list of desired areas widens the pool without taking you far from Cheadle's shops and schools. Check your messages regularly, reply to everyone, and always visit a property and speak to both landlords before agreeing anything.
