More about living in Glasgow

What it's like to live in Glasgow

Day to day, the rhythm is urban. There are small supermarkets and independent grocers within a few hundred metres, including a Premier, an Aldi and a Sainsbury's Local, plus international food shops that reflect how mixed the area is. Pharmacies are easy to reach too, with Townhead Pharmacy and High Street Pharmacy both a short walk.

Townhead itself still feels like a community rather than an extension of the centre. Townhead Village Hall, St Mungo's Village Hall and the Glasgow Mena Centre all run from within walking distance. That mix of city convenience and local halls is the thing long-term residents talk about most.

Getting around

You do not need a car here, and many households manage without one. High Street station is about a third of a mile away, with Queen Street Station around half a mile and Glasgow Central under a mile. Between them you can reach most of Scotland without changing in awkward places, and Argyle Street and Bellgrove stations add more local options.

Buses are just as strong. There are stops at High Street Station, Montrose Street and Cathedral Street nearby, and Buchanan Bus Station, the hub for longer coach and intercity routes, is around half a mile on foot.

Walking is the real advantage. The city centre shops, cinemas and offices are fifteen to twenty minutes away at a normal pace. Driving is the weak spot: central Glasgow traffic is heavy, parking is tight and often controlled, so check what comes with any property before you commit to a swap.

Schools and family life

There is a decent spread of schools close by. St Mungo's RC Primary is practically on the doorstep at around a tenth of a mile, with Olivewood Primary, Royston Primary, St Martin's Primary and St Roch's RC Primary all within a mile. That means most families here have a short walk to the school gate, whether you want denominational or non-denominational.

For older children, St Roch's Secondary is under half a mile, with Abercorn Secondary, Parkhill School and Springburn Academy all within a couple of miles. Always check catchments with Glasgow City Council, as a short distance does not guarantee a place.

Outside school, you have Cathedral Square, the Children's Memorial Park, Taylor Street Gardens and the Greyfriars Biophilic Garden all within a few minutes. None of them are big country parks, but they are handy for a run-around. Royston Library and the Sir Alex Ferguson Library are both close for homework and rainy afternoons.

Things to do

Being this close to the centre means your options are enormous for the effort involved. Buchanan Galleries, Princes Square and the Italian Centre are all within a mile for shopping. For films, there is the Omniplex on Renfrew Street, Everyman, the Vue at St Enoch and the Glasgow Film Theatre, none of them more than a mile away.

If you like to keep active, Strathclyde Sport is a couple of hundred metres away, with Reform+ Gym, CaveFit and ARC Health and Fitness all within half a mile. Powerleague Glasgow is nearby for five-a-side.

Nightlife is on your doorstep rather than a taxi ride away, with Arta, Club 45, The I Lounge and AXM all around half a mile off, and pubs like The Howgait closer still. The Gallery of Modern Art and its library are under a mile. It is a genuinely good spot for anyone who hates missing out.

Work and the local economy

Glasgow is Scotland's largest jobs market, and G4 sits beside the biggest concentration of it. The city centre offices, shops and hospitality venues are a walk away, which cuts commuting costs considerably compared with the suburbs.

Two big employers are right here. Glasgow Royal Infirmary is a couple of hundred metres away and employs a large NHS workforce across clinical and support roles. Strathclyde University's campus is just as close, bringing academic, administrative, catering and facilities work.

If your job is outside the city, the position still works. Queen Street and Central stations put much of the central belt within commuting distance, and Buchanan Bus Station covers longer routes. Driving out at rush hour is the slowest option. Employment figures quoted for Glasgow cover the whole council area, which is far bigger and more varied than this one postcode.

Housing and who lives here

Housing in G4 is mostly flats. You will find tenement properties, post-war blocks and newer developments, with council and housing association homes mixed in among private lets and student accommodation. Gardens are rare; shared closes, stairs and balconies are the norm. If outdoor space matters to you, this is the main thing to weigh up.

The population is mixed in every sense. Long-standing Townhead families live alongside students from the nearby campus, NHS staff, young professionals and households from a wide range of backgrounds, which you can see in the local food shops.

Sizes vary a lot. One and two bedroom flats are common, and larger family homes exist but turn over less often. Be realistic about floor, lift access and heating when you view, because older central blocks differ enormously from one street to the next.
