What it's like to live in Clayton-le-Moors

There is a good spread of schools for a town this size. St Mary's RC Primary School is right in Clayton-le-Moors, a tenth of a mile out, with All Saints C of E Primary School barely further. Within about a mile you also have St John's, Great Harwood St John's C of E Primary and St Nicholas C of E Primary.

For older children, St Christopher's C of E High School Academy and Accrington Academy are both around a mile away, with Norden High School and Sports College at a mile and a half and Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School just over two miles. Worth checking catchments and places before you commit to a swap.

Across the wider Hyndburn area, 20.1% of residents are under 16, a little above the England figure, so there are plenty of families about. Parks, community centres and sports facilities are close at hand.

You do not need a car to get by here, though many households have one. Sydney Street bus stop is about a third of a mile from the centre, with Mercer Hall, Lyndon House and Barnmeadow Lane all within a mile and a quarter, linking the town with Accrington and Great Harwood.

For trains, Huncoat is the nearest station at around a mile and a half, with Accrington station just under two miles and Rishton and Church & Oswaldtwistle both about the same. Hapton is a little further at under three miles. That gives you a few options depending on which side of town you land on.

On foot, the centre is compact. Shops, the library, the community centre, a pharmacy and several parks are all within about half a mile, so short journeys are genuinely walkable. By car, you are close to Accrington and its retail parks.

Green space is one of the town's quiet strengths. Spider Wick, Mercer Park and Woodlands are all around a third of a mile from the centre, with the Moorfield Colliery Memorial and Oakenshaw Woods a short walk beyond. That is a lot of outdoors within easy reach.

For exercise indoors, The Fitness Hub and JC's Muay Thai Gym & Fitness Centre are both within a third of a mile, and Cath Thom Sports Centre and Wilson's sports village are about half a mile away.

Pubs are plentiful and local: The Albion, The Crows Nest and BTB Old England Forever sit close to the centre, with The Royal Oak and Forts Arms nearby. For a bigger night or a film, Accrington is a mile and a half off, with Vue Cinema, the Arndale and Eastgate Retail Park.

Hyndburn is a working borough rather than a booming one, and it is honest to say the figures are a touch below the England average. Across the council area, 54.3% of adults are in work compared with 57.4% nationally, while unemployment sits at 3.4%, roughly in line with England's 3.5%.

Benefit claims tell a similar story: in August 2026, 5.6% of 16 to 64 year olds in Hyndburn were claiming unemployment-related benefits, against 4% for England.

Plenty of people here commute. Accrington is minutes away by bus or car, and the train stations at Huncoat, Accrington and Rishton open up the wider Lancashire rail network for work further afield. If you are moving for a job, check the journey at rush hour before you decide.

Social renting is less common here than nationally: 13.5% of homes in Hyndburn are social rented, made up of 3.5% council and 10% housing association, against 17.1% across England. Owner occupation is high at 63.1%, with 23.1% privately rented.

Onward Homes Limited is by far the biggest social landlord in the borough with over 3,300 homes, followed by Your Housing Limited, Accent Housing Limited, Great Places Housing Association and Anchor Hanover Group.

Rents are modest. Average weekly social rents across Hyndburn in 2024/25 were about £82 for a one bed, £93 for a two bed and £103 for a three bed. The age profile is broadly in line with England, with slightly more under-16s and 45 to 64 year olds, so expect a mix of families and long-settled households.
