What it's like to live in Bacup

There's a good cluster of primaries for a town this size. Bacup Thorn Primary School is about 0.3 miles away, St Mary's RC Primary 0.4, St Saviour's Community Primary 0.7, St Joseph's RC at Stacksteads 0.9 and Northern Primary around a mile. Most families can find something within a walk or a very short bus ride.

Secondary choice is thinner. The Valley Leadership Academy, about 1.7 miles off, is the only secondary within three miles, so factor in travel if you'd want something different at eleven.

For time out of the house there's Maden Recreational Ground close to the centre, Stubbylee Park and Moorlands Park a little further, plus Bacup Community Centre. Across Lancashire as a whole, 18% of people are under 16, close to the England average.

Buses are the backbone here. There are stops right in the middle of town, including Bacup Post Office and two at St James Gardens, plus Carlton Street and one near Bacup Fire Station. If you're used to running a life around a bus timetable, you'll manage.

There's no railway station listed in the area, so plan on buses or a car for longer journeys. That's the main trade-off of living at the head of the valley, and it's worth checking your likely commute or hospital route properly before you commit.

Inside the town itself, walking wins. Shops, chemists, the library and the bus stops are all within a few hundred metres of each other, so many households here get by without a car.

This is a town for outdoor days and local habits rather than big attractions. Maden Recreational Ground is a short walk from the centre, with Stubbylee Park, Moorlands Park and a viewing area all around 0.8 miles out, and New Line Picnic Site about a mile away. The moors above the valley shape everything.

The town centre has a decent run of pubs for its size, including Little Queens, The Merchants Barrel, The British Queen, The Barr and The Cornerstone. The Barr is the one place listed for a later night out.

Otherwise there's Bacup Library in town, a few gyms including The Training Mill, and community centres at Bacup, Whitewell Bottom and Cowpe. Trickett's Arcade is about 2.3 miles away if you want a wander further afield.

Bacup is a small town, so plenty of people travel out of the valley for work. Local jobs tend to be in the shops, supermarkets, schools, care and the pubs and gyms around the centre, and the compact layout means some of those are walkable.

Across Lancashire, 55% of adults are in work, a shade below the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment is 2.9% against 3.5% nationally. In August 2026, 3.6% of 16 to 64 year olds were claiming unemployment-related benefits, compared with 4% for England.

If your job is outside the valley, check the bus journey carefully first. Getting in and out is the single biggest practical question here.

Most of Bacup's housing stock is older stone terraces stepping up the valley sides, with newer pockets mixed in. Homes tend to be smaller and cheaper than in bigger Lancashire towns, and many have steps, slopes or on-street parking to think about.

Social renting is less common across Lancashire than nationally: 12.3% of homes are socially rented, split between 3.7% council and 8.7% housing association, against 17.1% for England. Owner occupation runs high at 68.2%, with 18.7% privately rented.

The age profile for the wider county leans a little older than England's, with 20.7% aged 65 and over. In practice Bacup feels like a settled town where people stay put, which is good for neighbours but means swaps don't come up every week.
