What it's like to live in Accrington

Families are well served for schools within walking distance. Primary options close by include Benjamin Hargreaves C of E, Saint John with Saint Augustine C of E, St Mary Magdalen's C of E, Woodnook Primary and Peel Park Primary, all within half a mile.

For secondary, Accrington Academy, Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School and St Christopher's C of E High School Academy are under a mile, with The Hollins a little further. Check admissions and current inspection reports yourself, as catchments and ratings change.

For days out with children there is Milnshaw Park, Arden Hall Playing Fields and Woodnook Vale Nature Reserve. Accrington Library is right in the centre, and there are community centres including The Sensory Hub Hyndburn, The Woodnook Centre and Scaitcliffe Community Centre.

Accrington station is about 0.2 miles from the centre, which is genuinely unusual for a town this size. Church & Oswaldtwistle, Huncoat and Rishton stations are also within three miles, so nearby villages are reachable by rail as well.

The bus station on Warner Street is right in the middle of town, with multiple stands. If your days involve school runs, appointments and shifts, you can string most of it together on foot and by bus.

Health services are close too. Accrington Pals Primary Health Care Centre and King Street Medical Centre are both within a quarter of a mile, with Oswald Medical Centre under a mile away.

For a town of this size there is a decent amount going on. Vue Cinema is in the centre, and the shopping is spread across Accrington Arndale, the Victorian Arcade, Fashion 300 Mall and Eastgate Retail Park.

If you exercise, you are spoilt: The Gym Group, Central Fitness 24/7 and Jetts 24 Hour Gym are all within a few minutes' walk, plus smaller personal training setups.

Evenings are pub-led. The Commercial Hotel, The Warner Arms, The Crafty Fox and Jax Bar are all central, with Dodge Nightclub and Berkley Club for later nights. Quieter days mean Peel memorial seating area, the parks, or the library.

These figures cover Lancashire as a whole rather than Accrington alone. Around 55% of adults are in work, a little below the England average of 57.4%, while unemployment is 2.9% against 3.5% nationally. In August 2026, 3.6% of working-age people claimed unemployment-related benefits, below the England figure of 4%.

Locally, the town centre itself is an employer base: retail across the Arndale and Eastgate, supermarkets, pharmacies, gyms and health centres all sit within walking distance.

The rail links matter for work too. With the station so central, jobs in neighbouring East Lancashire towns are reachable without running a car.

Across Lancashire, 12.3% of homes are social rented, made up of 3.7% council and 8.7% housing association. That is below the England average of 17.1%, so social stock is tighter here than in some areas. Owner-occupation is high at 68.2%, with 18.7% privately rented.

The age profile for the county leans a little older than England overall: 20.7% are 65 or over, against 18.4% nationally, and 26.8% are aged 45 to 64. Around 18% are under 16, so it is still a family area.

Accrington's housing is largely traditional terraced streets close to the centre, with more space as you move out towards the parks.
