What it's like to live in Church

Families are well served for choice. Church, St Nicholas Church of England Primary is about 0.1 miles away, with Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Primary at 0.2 miles and Hyndburn Park Primary at 0.3 miles. Oswaldtwistle School and Accrington St Mary Magdalen's Church of England Primary are both under a mile.

For older children, St Christopher's C of E High School Academy is roughly 0.4 miles, Accrington Academy 0.6 miles and Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School just under a mile. Norden High School and Sports College is 1.7 miles away. Always check current admissions and catchment rules before you commit to a swap.

There is plenty of green space for children too. Gatty Park is a couple of minutes away, Milnshaw Park is 0.4 miles, and Foxhill Bank Nature Reserve at 0.8 miles is good for a longer walk.

Church & Oswaldtwistle station is about half a mile away, and Accrington station is around 0.7 miles, so you have two options on the East Lancashire line without needing a car. Rishton and Huncoat stations are also within two miles if a job or family takes you that way.

Accrington bus station is roughly 0.8 miles off, with multiple stands serving the surrounding towns. That makes buses a genuine option for shopping, college or work rather than a last resort.

On foot, Church is easy going. School runs, the leisure centre, the supermarket and a pharmacy are all within a short walk of most streets. If you do drive, you are close to the main routes through Hyndburn, though parking on older terraced streets can be tight.

For a town of this size, there is a decent amount going on nearby. Hyndburn Leisure Centre sits right on the doorstep at 0.1 miles, and there is an outdoor multi-gym plus smaller fitness studios within half a mile or so.

Accrington gives you the bigger draws: Vue Cinema Accrington is about 0.7 miles away, and Accrington Arndale, Oswaldtwistle Mills Home and Lifestyle and Accrington Trade Park cover most shopping. Accrington Library is 0.8 miles, with Oswaldtwistle and Rishton libraries also within a couple of miles.

Local pubs include The Acorn and the Thorn Inn, both around 0.3 miles, with The George, the Packet Inn and The Grey Horse a little further. Community Solutions North West, Adventure Hyndburn and Banbury Close Community Centre all run from within half a mile, which matters if you want to meet people quickly.

In the wider Hyndburn area, 54.3% of adults are in work, a little below the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment sits at 3.4%, broadly in line with England's 3.5%, though unemployment-related benefit claims were higher at 5.6% of 16 to 64 year olds in August 2026 against 4% nationally.

In practice, that means local work is available but competition can be real, and many people commute. The two nearby stations and Accrington bus station make travelling out for work realistic, whether that is elsewhere in Lancashire or further along the line.

Closer to home, the retail parks, supermarkets, schools and health centres around Accrington and Oswaldtwistle are the sort of employers that keep a town this size ticking over.

Church is mostly older terraced housing, and across Hyndburn 63.1% of homes are owned outright or on a mortgage. Social renting makes up 13.5%, below the England figure of 17.1%, split between 3.5% council and 10% housing association. Private renting is high at 23.1%.

The biggest social landlord by far is Onward Homes Limited with 3,308 homes in the council area, followed by Your Housing Limited, Accent Housing Limited, Great Places Housing Association and Anchor Hanover Group.

Rents are among the lower ones you will find. Average weekly social rents in Hyndburn for 2024/25 were about £82 for a one bed, £93 for a two bed and £103 for a three bed. With a smaller social housing stock than the national average, suitable swaps may take patience.
