What it's like to live in Bootle

There's a good spread of primary schools in a small area. Christ Church Church of England Primary, All Saints Catholic Primary, Thomas Gray Primary and Linacre Primary are all around a third of a mile from the centre, with Kings Lander Primary Academy a little over half a mile. Check current admissions and Ofsted reports for any you're serious about.

For secondary, Hillside High School is under a mile away. The Alsop High School, Liverpool Progressive School, Everton Free School and Notre Dame Catholic Academy are all within a couple of miles.

For days out, Gateway Explorers, North Park and Garden, Marsh Lane Park, Mellanear Park and Derby Park are all within half a mile. Bootle Library is close by, and there are community centres including The Linacre Community Centre and Brunswick Youth and Community Centre. Across Sefton, 16.7% of residents are under 16, a little below the England average.

Bootle is one of the better-connected places in Merseyside for a town its size. Bootle New Strand station is around 100 metres from the centre, with Bootle Oriel Road about half a mile away, and Seaforth & Litherland, Kirkdale and Walton all within roughly a mile. That gives you real choice if you commute into Liverpool or up the coast.

Buses run from Bootle Strand Interchange, just by the shopping centre, and from Bootle Oriel Road Interchange a little further out. Orrell Mount is another option within a mile.

On foot, the centre is flat and compact, so shops, the library, the leisure centre and the health centre are all an easy walk from much of L20. Drivers get quick access towards Liverpool and out to Switch Island, though parking on the older terraced streets can be tight.

Most of the everyday stuff is within walking distance. The Strand Shopping Centre anchors the town, and Bootle Library is a short walk from it. Bootle Leisure Centre is nearby, along with a good crop of independent gyms, including Johnos Boxing & Fitness, Evolve Combat Academy, DUAL fitness and Boogie Bounce Bootle.

For a drink, the North Park Tavern, Addison Arms, The Alexandra Pub and Hyperbar are all within a couple of hundred metres. For a bigger night out, Caven club and Frames Lounge are under two miles, with more options towards Liverpool.

Cinema-wise, the Plaza Community Cinema is about two miles away, TheLight at New Brighton around two and a half, and ODEON Luxe at Switch Island a similar distance. Aintree Racecourse Retail and Business Park and Great Homer Street District Centre widen the shopping choice.

Bootle has long been a dock and commercial town, and the retail, health and community services clustered around the centre are visible employers. The Strand Shopping Centre, the medical centres and the leisure and community venues all sit within walking distance of most of L20.

Across the Sefton council area, 53.6% of adults are in work, below the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment stands at 3%, slightly under the 3.5% England average, and 3.8% of 16 to 64 year olds were claiming unemployment-related benefits in August 2026, just below the England rate of 4%.

The rail links matter here. With several stations within a mile, jobs across Liverpool and the wider Merseyside area are realistically reachable without a car.

Most of Bootle's housing stock is terraced, and the wider Sefton area is dominated by owner-occupiers at 66.6%, with 18.2% privately rented. Social renting accounts for 14.4%, split between council homes at 3.4% and housing associations at 11%. That's a bit below the England average of 17.1%, so social homes here are in demand.

One Vision Housing is by far the biggest social landlord in Sefton with around 10,717 homes, followed by The Riverside Group, Jigsaw Homes North, Plus Dane Housing and Prima Housing Group.

Average weekly social rents across Sefton in 2024/25 were £92 for a one-bed, £100 for a two-bed and £115 for a three-bed. Sefton skews older than England as a whole, with 23.2% aged 65 and over against 18.4% nationally.
