What it's like to live in Chester

There is a good spread of primary schools close in. Grosvenor Park CofE Academy and North West Academies Trust sit about 0.3 miles out, with Chester Blue Coat CE Primary at 0.6 miles and Overleigh St. Mary's at 0.8 miles. The Queen's School is 0.2 miles away.

For secondary, Queen's Park High School is half a mile out, The Catholic High School 0.8 miles and The Bishops' Blue Coat CofE High School just over a mile. Upton-by-Chester High and Blacon High are around two miles. Check admission areas early, as church schools have their own rules.

In the wider Cheshire West and Chester area, 17.2% of residents are under 16, a touch below the England figure. Community centres such as The Wesley Church Centre and St Mary's Handbridge Centre run local activities.

Chester station is about 0.7 miles from the centre, with Bache a little further out at 1.3 miles. Two stations within walking or short bus distance is a real advantage if you commute or visit family away from the city.

Buses cluster around Foregate Street, with several stops within a couple of hundred metres of the centre, plus stops at the railway station. That makes hopping between the centre, the suburbs and the station straightforward without a car.

On foot, central Chester is one of the easier English cities to manage. Shops, pharmacies, the library, parks and GP surgeries are nearly all within half a mile. If you do drive, the ring of roads around the walls gives decent access out towards the wider region, though parking in the centre is the usual city headache.

Storyhouse is the anchor: library, cinema and theatre in one building, about 0.2 miles from the centre. Chester Picturehouse is close by, and Moonlight Flicks adds open-air screenings nearby.

Green space in the centre is small-scale rather than sprawling. Chester Roman Gardens, Abbey Green, the Garden of the Honourable Cheshire Regiment and George Street Pocket Park are all within a few minutes' walk, good for a sit-down or a short run-around rather than a long afternoon.

For shopping, Chester City Centre, Eastgate Square, Rufus Court and Coachworks Arcade are all within a quarter of a mile. Pubs and bars are plentiful, from The Victoria and Watergates Bar to Turtle Bay and Rosies, so evenings out need no planning at all.

Across the Cheshire West and Chester council area, 57.2% of adults are in work, almost exactly the England figure, and unemployment sits lower at 2.8% against 3.5% nationally. Unemployment-related benefit claims were 2.6% of working-age people in August 2026, below the England rate of 4%.

That points to a reasonably steady local job market. Central Chester's own economy leans on retail, hospitality and tourism, which brings plenty of shift and seasonal work but not always regular hours.

The train links matter here. With Chester and Bache stations close by, commuting out to bigger job markets is realistic without needing a car, which widens your options considerably.

Social renting is less common here than nationally: 14.6% of homes in the council area are socially rented, against 17.1% across England, split between 6.1% council and 8.6% housing association. Owner-occupation is high at 68.3%, so social stock is in demand and swaps are worth chasing.

The biggest landlords in the area are Sanctuary Housing Association and Weaver Vale Housing Trust, both with just over 6,000 homes, followed by Cheshire West and Chester Council with 5,305, then Muir Group and Your Housing.

Average weekly social rents in 2024/25 were £93 for a one-bed, £106 for a two-bed and £116 for a three-bed. Compared with private rents in a city like this, that is a significant gap, which is another reason people hold onto tenancies here.
