What it's like to live in Denton

Families are well served for schools. Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Primary and Nursery School and Russell Scott Primary School are both within a third of a mile of the centre, with St Anne's, Greswell Primary and Nursery and Corrie Primary & Nursery all inside a mile. Check current places and admission rules with Tameside before you commit to a swap.

For older children, St Thomas More RC College is around 0.4 miles away and Audenshaw School under a mile. Hyde High School and Wright Robinson College are both within about two miles.

For days out with the kids, Victoria Park is practically on the doorstep, with Tame Street Park and Stanhope Park close behind. Denton Library is a short walk, and there are smaller community libraries at Haughton Green and Denton West End. Across Tameside, 19.8% of residents are under 16, slightly above the England average, so there are plenty of children about.

Denton station is about 0.7 miles from the town centre, though it is a small station. Hyde Central, Guide Bridge, Hyde North and Flowery Field are all within around a mile and a half and give you more choice, with Guide Bridge in particular being a useful junction.

Buses are the workhorse here. The Crown Point stops are right in the town centre, with several stands, and Hyde Bus Station is about 1.4 miles away if you need a wider spread of routes.

On foot, central Denton is easy going. Shops, library, park, pharmacies and a primary school are all within half a mile of each other, so plenty of daily trips need no ticket or fuel at all. If you drive, the town's position on the eastern side of Manchester puts a lot of the region within reach, and the retail parks have parking.

Denton's social life is pub-led and unpretentious. The Red Lion, Log Bar, The Queen Vic, Toll Point and Percy's are all in or right beside the town centre, so a night out can be a short walk rather than a taxi fare.

If you want something bigger, Cineworld at Ashton-under-Lyne is about 2.3 miles away, and there are a few late bars and lounges nearby, including Premier Suite & Lounge and the Astley Arms.

For keeping active, there is a decent spread of small gyms and clubs close in, including The Gymbox 61, Betta Bodies, Hiit Hub and a couple of martial arts and kickboxing setups. Denton Festival Hall sits by the town centre for community events, and Yew Tree Community Centre, Haughton Green Young People's Centre and the Oasis and Hyde Youth Hub serve the surrounding areas.

Across the Tameside council area, 57.1% of adults are in work, almost exactly the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment at 3.5% matches England too. Benefit claimants related to unemployment stood at 4.9% of 16 to 64 year olds in August 2026, a little above the England rate of 4%.

In practice, that means Denton is an ordinary working town rather than a boom area or a struggling one. Local jobs cluster around the retail parks and shops at Crown Point and the health services in town.

The bigger draw is position. With several stations within a mile and a half and frequent buses from Crown Point, commuting out of Denton to work elsewhere in Greater Manchester is a normal part of life here.

Social renting is a bit more common in Tameside than nationally, at 21.2% of homes against 17.1% for England. Most of that is housing association stock at 15.6%, with council housing at 5.6%. Around 60.8% of homes are owned and 17.5% privately rented, so streets tend to be mixed rather than all one tenure.

Jigsaw Homes Tameside is by far the largest social landlord in the borough with over 15,000 homes, followed by Onward Homes, Regenda, Irwell Valley and Ashton Pioneer Homes.

Average weekly social rents across Tameside in 2024/25 were about £88 for a one bed, £100 for two beds and £114 for three. The age profile is close to the England average, with slightly more under-16s and slightly fewer pensioners, which fits the family feel of the place.
