What it's like to live in Ashton-under-Lyne

There is a good cluster of primary schools very close to the town centre. St James' Church of England Primary is around 0.2 miles away, with Canon Johnson C of E, Holy Trinity C of E and Parochial C of E all within half a mile. Great Academies Education Trust also sits about 0.3 miles out.

For older children, Oasis Academy Broadoak is 0.8 miles away, Great Academy Ashton just over a mile, West Hill School 1.2 miles and All Saints Catholic High School 1.5 miles. Tameside Pupil Referral Service is also nearby.

Across Tameside, 19.8% of residents are under 16, a little above the England average of 18.6%. It is a young-family sort of borough, and Ashton reflects that.

This is one of the easiest towns in Greater Manchester to live in without a car. Ashton-under-Lyne station is about 0.1 miles from the centre, and Ashton Bus Station is right there too, so you can step off a bus and onto a train in a couple of minutes.

Stalybridge station is 1.3 miles away and Guide Bridge 1.4 miles, which gives you options if a line is disrupted. Hyde North and Flowery Field are both within about two miles.

Local bus stops are dotted through the residential streets, with Holden Street, Whitworth Close, Warwick Road and West Street all under a mile from the centre. For school runs, shift work and hospital appointments, that frequency matters more than anything.

Green space is closer than you might expect for a town centre. Memorial Gardens is about 0.3 miles away, with Westend Park, Hockey Pitch Playing Fields and Cooper's Ride all within half a mile, and Bank Top Field a little beyond.

Tameside Central Library and Art Gallery is right in the centre, with Ashton Library and Information Service and the Local Studies and Archive Centre close by. Dukinfield Library is just over a mile away. Libraries matter when you need free warmth, wi-fi and something for the kids in the holidays.

Cineworld is under a mile. There are several gyms within a couple of hundred metres, including PureGym and martial arts at Manchester Top Team. Pubs like The Ash Tree, The Bowling Green and The Old Fire Station are all a short walk, and there are karaoke and cabaret bars in the centre.

Across Tameside, 57.1% of adults are in work, almost exactly the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment sits at 3.5%, matching England. So on paper the job market is fairly typical.

That said, 4.9% of working-age people in the borough were claiming unemployment-related benefits in August 2026, compared with 4% across England. Money is tight for a lot of households here, and that shows.

The town centre itself is retail-heavy, with the Arcades and Ladysmith shopping centres, Ashton Retail Park and Snipe Retail Park at 1.6 miles. The train and tram links put central Manchester within commuting reach if you need to look further afield for work.

Tameside has more social housing than England as a whole: 21.2% of homes are socially rented, against 17.1% nationally. Most of that is housing association stock at 15.6%, with council homes making up 5.6%. Around 60.8% of homes are owned and 17.5% privately rented.

The age mix is broad. Just over a quarter of residents are 25 to 44 and another quarter are 45 to 64, with 17.5% aged 65 and over. The borough's population is about 231,000.

On crime, police recorded three offences within roughly a mile of the centre in July 2026, all violent crime. That is a small snapshot of one month, not the whole picture, but it is worth knowing that a busy town centre brings town-centre problems, especially at night.
