What it's like to live in Ashton-under-Lyne

Tameside has a slightly higher share of social housing than England overall, at 21.2% against 17.1%. Most of it is housing association rather than council: 15.6% housing association and 5.6% council. Around 60.8% of homes are owned and 17.5% privately rented, so social tenants are a solid part of a mixed picture rather than a small minority.

St James' Church of England Primary, Canon Johnson C of E, Holy Trinity C of E and Parochial C of E are all within half a mile, which means many families have a short walk to the gates rather than a bus ride. For older children, Oasis Academy Broadoak is under a mile away, with Great Academy Ashton, West Hill School and All Saints Catholic High School all within a mile and a half. Tameside Pupil Referral Service is also nearby.

Outside school, the town is well served for the everyday stuff: Ashton Library and Information Service and the Central Library, Tameside Bookstart, and community venues including St Ann's Social Centre, Holy Trinity Community Centre and the 4C Community Centre. Westend Park and Hockey Pitch Playing Fields cover the run-around time.

Ashton is well connected for a town of its size. Ashton Bus Station sits in the town centre, with stops such as Holden Street, Whitworth Close and Warwick Road spread through the surrounding streets, so most homes are a short walk from a route. Ashton-under-Lyne station is right beside it, with Stalybridge and Guide Bridge both under a mile and a half away if you want alternatives.

On foot the centre is easy. Shops, library, pharmacies, GP surgeries and the cinema are all within about three quarters of a mile of each other, which means plenty of people here manage without a car.

If you do drive, you are on the eastern side of Greater Manchester with the retail parks and neighbouring towns of Dukinfield, Stalybridge and Hyde close at hand. Parking in the centre is the usual town-centre mix, so check what a specific property offers before you commit to a swap.

For a town this size, Ashton is not short of things to fill a weekend. Cineworld is about three quarters of a mile from the centre, and there is a decent choice of gyms, including PureGym, International Gym, Manchester Top Team and a couple of smaller independents, nearly all within a short walk of the shops.

Pubs are plentiful and traditional. The Ladysmith, The Old Fire Station, The Ash Tree, Prince Of Orange and The Bowling Green are all within a few minutes of each other, and evenings out stretch to Blues Cabaret and Karaoke Bar, Chute Bar and the Astley Arms.

Quieter options include Tameside Central Library and Art Gallery, the Local Studies and Archive Centre for anyone curious about the town's past, and the Little Bun Tea Room. Add the parks and you have enough variety for most tastes without needing to travel.

Across the Tameside council area, 57.1% of adults are in work, almost exactly the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment sits at 3.5%, the same as England. So on the census measures this is a fairly typical working area rather than a struggling one.

That said, unemployment-related benefit claims in Tameside were running at 4.9% of working-age people in August 2026, against 4% for England. It is worth knowing if you are moving for work.

The town centre itself is a source of jobs, with two shopping centres, a retail park, supermarkets and pubs all within walking distance. The bigger draw is what the train and bus links open up: commuting from Ashton to other parts of Greater Manchester is normal here, and having a station in the centre makes that a realistic option without a car.
