What it's like to live in Eccles

There's a good cluster of primaries within walking distance. St Mary's Primary is about 0.1 miles from the centre, with St Andrew's Primary at 0.2 miles, Clarendon Road Community Primary at 0.3 miles and Lewis Street Primary at 0.6 miles. Branwood Preparatory School, an independent, is half a mile away.

For secondary, Ellesmere Park High School is under a mile, New Park Academy is 0.8 miles, St Patrick's RC High School is 1.2 miles and Buile Hill Academy is about 1.6 miles. Check places and catchments directly with Salford City Council before you agree a swap.

Salford as a whole skews young: 19.7% of residents are under 16, above the England figure of 18.6%, and 32.5% are aged 25 to 44. You're unlikely to be the only family on the street. Eccles Public Library and Eccles Gateway are both in the town centre, with Hope Library under a mile away.

Eccles has a train station about a third of a mile from the centre, with Patricroft station under a mile away. Swinton, Trafford Park and Humphrey Park stations are all a little over two miles off, so you have options if one line suits your journey better.

Buses run from South King Street about a mile away, and the Trafford Centre bus station is roughly 1.2 miles from town, with Trafford Wharf Road a bit further. Between them you have routes towards Manchester, the Quays and the shopping centre.

On foot, the town centre works well: shops, library, pharmacies and the leisure centre are all clustered tightly. If you drive, you're close to the main roads towards Trafford Park and the motorway network, though parking on older terraced streets can be tight.

Green space is local rather than sprawling. Eccles Recreation Ground is 0.3 miles away, with Cromwell Field, Ivy Street Recreation Ground and Three Sisters all within a mile. Handy for a kickabout or a dog walk, though you'll travel further for anything wilder.

For exercise indoors, Eccles Leisure Centre is right by the centre and PureGym Manchester Eccles is 0.4 miles away, alongside smaller independents like Indomitable Strength Barbell Club and Hookgrip Fitness.

Shopping and nights out are a real draw here. Eccles Shopping Centre is on the doorstep, West One Retail Park is 0.4 miles and Trafford Palazzo and the ODEON Trafford Centre are just over a mile. Closer to home, the Old Bulls Head, Nags Head, The Grapes, The Eccles Cross and The Oddfellows Arms are all within a few minutes' walk. Vue Cinema at Salford Quays is two miles off.

Across the Salford council area, 58.8% of adults are in work, a shade above the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment sits at 4.7% against 3.5% for England, and 5.1% of 16 to 64 year olds were claiming unemployment-related benefits in August 2026, compared with 4% nationally. So work is there, but competition is real.

Health and care is a visible local employer: Salford Royal is 0.7 miles away, with an Urgent Treatment Centre and the Geoffrey Jefferson Brain Research Centre nearby, plus Vista Health Salford closer in.

Retail and hospitality matter too, with the Trafford Centre, West One Retail Park and the town centre pubs and takeaways all close. Trafford Park's businesses are within a couple of miles, and Manchester city centre is reachable by train.

Eccles housing is mixed: older terraces, interwar and postwar estates, and newer blocks nearer the Quays end. Across Salford, 25.4% of homes are socially rented, well above the England figure of 17.1%, split 11.8% council and 13.6% housing association. Another 47% are owned and 26.8% privately rented.
