What it's like to live in Farnborough

Farnborough is a busy, modern town in north-east Hampshire, part of the Rushmoor borough and home to around 65,000 people. It feels practical rather than picture-postcard: a redeveloped town centre, plenty of chain shops and places to eat, and quiet residential streets fanning out from it. It suits families and working households, with Queen Elizabeth Park and a main-line station close at hand.

"I'd move here" adds Farnborough to the areas on your listing, so homes here are matched to you first.

Farnborough sits in the north-east corner of Hampshire, in the borough of Rushmoor, hard against the Surrey border. Aldershot is its close neighbour, with Frimley and Camberley just east and Guildford, Basingstoke and Reading all within reach. London is the other big pull, and plenty of people here make that journey.

What draws people to move is largely practicality. The town has a main-line railway station, good road links and a town centre that has been rebuilt in recent decades, so you get a lot of everyday convenience in one place. It is also an aviation town, known for its airfield and airshow, and that history still shapes the local economy.

For tenants thinking about a swap, Farnborough is worth a look if you want a southern town that is well connected without being central London prices in terms of distance from green space. Rushmoor as a whole has just under 100,000 residents across Farnborough and Aldershot, so it is a decent-sized area with proper facilities rather than a small commuter dormitory.

What is it like to live in Farnborough?

Day to day, most things sit within a short distance of the centre. Asda, Sainsbury's and Lidl are all within a few minutes of each other, with Asia Oriental nearby for something different, and Princes Mead and Solartron Retail Park covering the bigger shops. Boots, the Asda pharmacy and Clockhouse Pharmacy handle prescriptions, and Farnborough Library is right in the middle of things.

The neighbourhoods have their own feel. North Farnborough and South Farnborough are older and leafier, Cove sits to the west with its own school and shops, and the streets around the centre are the most built-up. Green space is never far: King George V Playing Fields, Queens Road Recreational Ground and Napier Gardens are all local, with Frimley Lodge Park a little further out.

What are the schools and family life like in Farnborough?

There is a good spread of primary schools close to the centre. St Peter's Church of England Aided Junior School is only a few minutes away, with St Patrick's Catholic Primary, Tower Hill Primary, North Farnborough Infant School and South Farnborough Junior School all within a mile. That mix of infant, junior and all-through primaries is worth checking carefully if you are moving mid-year.

For secondary, Farnborough Hill and Salesian College are both close by, with Cove School a little over a mile west. Henry Tyndale School and Samuel Cody School also serve the area, which matters if your child has additional needs. Frimley Park Hospital, around two miles out, is the main hospital for the area.

Family life outside school leans on the parks. King George V Playing Fields and Queen Elizabeth Park are the nearest for a kickabout, and Frimley Lodge Park is the one for a proper day out. Gymfinity Kids sits in the centre, and there are community groups including the 8th Farnborough Scout Group and Frimley Green Youth Centre.

How do you get around Farnborough?

Farnborough (Main) station is the big one, about half a mile from the centre, on the South Western main line with fast services towards London and down to the south coast. Farnborough North sits a mile out on the line between Reading and Guildford, and Frimley and North Camp are both around a mile and a half away, so you have a genuine choice of routes.

By road, the town sits close to the M3, which links towards London one way and Southampton the other, with the A331 giving a quick run south. Parking in the centre is mostly in car parks rather than on the street. There is a bus station near the airshow site, and local services connect Farnborough with Aldershot, Frimley and Camberley.

On foot, the centre is compact and flat enough for most people. Shops, the library, the cinema and several gyms are all clustered within a few minutes of each other, so a car is useful rather than essential if you live close in. Further out in Cove or South Farnborough, you will lean more on buses or a short drive.

What is there to do in Farnborough?

The town centre does the basics well. Vue Farnborough is right in the middle, there are several gyms including The Gym Group, Jetts Fitness and JD Gyms, and Princes Mead plus Solartron Retail Park cover shopping. A second cinema, Cineworld, and the larger Wellington Centre and The Arcade sit about three miles away in Aldershot.

For a drink, The Tilly Shilling is the best known of the town-centre pubs, with The Alexandra, The Victory, The Gloster and The Swan all within walking distance of the centre. Proper nightlife is thinner on the ground locally: Vybe Bar & Nightclub and Power Lounge are both closer to Aldershot.

Green space and quieter days out are easy. Frimley Lodge Park is the biggest nearby, and Queen Elizabeth Park, Napier Gardens and Queens Road Recreational Ground are all walkable from parts of town. Farnborough Library is a short walk from the centre, and the National Aerospace Library nods to the town's long aviation story.

What is work and the local economy like in Farnborough?

Rushmoor is a working borough. Census figures for the council area show 65.6% of adults in work, well above the England average of 57.4%, and unemployment at 3.1% against 3.5% nationally. More recent benefit claimant figures put the rate at 3% of 16 to 64 year olds, compared with 4% across England.

Much of that comes from the area's aerospace and defence connections, alongside business parks, retail in the town centre and the hospital and health jobs at Frimley Park. The age profile reflects it: 31.1% of residents in the council area are aged 25 to 44, noticeably higher than the England figure of 26.6%, and only 15.2% are 65 or over.

The flip side is that plenty of people here commute. With a main-line station and the M3 close by, jobs in Guildford, Reading, Basingstoke and London are all realistic. If you are moving for work, it is worth pricing a season ticket before you commit, because fares from this stretch of line are not cheap.

How safe is Farnborough?

Like every town centre, Farnborough has police incidents logged each month. In August 2026 there were 191 within about a mile of the centre, made up of:

  • Anti-social behaviour reports26
  • Vehicle crime13
  • Bicycle theft1
  • Shoplifting28
  • Other theft9
  • Theft from the person1

Source: data.police.uk street-level crime. Counts cover a fixed one-mile radius around the centre, so busy high streets and stations always record far more than the residential streets around them, and most incidents are minor. Compare like with like: a similar-sized town centre, not a village.

Is Farnborough a good place for social housing tenants?

If Farnborough looks like it would work for you, the practical next step is to get your own home listed. A clear advert with honest photographs, the number of bedrooms, the floor it sits on and anything a swapper should know, like parking or a garden, will get far more interest than a short description.

Then set Farnborough as a desired area. You can add nearby places too, such as Cove, Frimley or Aldershot, which widens your options without pulling you away from the same schools, station and hospital. Being open about which parts of town suit you helps the right people find you.

After that it is about keeping an eye out and replying promptly when someone gets in touch. Ask about the condition of the property, the rent, who the landlord is and what the neighbours are like, and visit before you agree anything. Both landlords need to approve a mutual exchange, so give yourself time and keep them in the loop.
