What it's like to live in Goole

Goole is a working port town of around 20,500 people in the East Riding of Yorkshire, at the western edge of the county. It feels practical and unpretentious rather than picture-postcard, and it suits people who want a small town where things are close to hand. Its own railway station and a cinema and theatre in the centre are real pluses.

"I'd move here" adds Goole to the areas on your listing, so homes here are matched to you first.

Goole sits in the far west of the East Riding of Yorkshire, in the Yorkshire and the Humber region, covered by the DN14 postcode district. It is an inland port on the tidal River Ouse, which gives the town its working character and its place on the map between the bigger centres of West and South Yorkshire and the Humber.

People move here for different reasons. Some want a small town rather than a city, with a hospital, schools, supermarkets and a railway station all within a mile or so. Others are drawn by social rents in the East Riding that are modest by national standards, and by the chance of a house rather than a flat.

Nearby, Howden is under three miles away and worth knowing about for its library and its own station at Saltmarshe. The surrounding villages are flat, quiet and farmed, so if you like open skies and short drives to open country, Goole gives you that without putting you far from the shops.

A register counts households who have applied, so it isn't a simple queue: some are already social tenants hoping to transfer, and people can be on more than one council's list.

Beyond the town, villages such as Airmyn, Hook and Swinefleet have their own memorial halls and village halls, which keeps a bit of community life going outside Goole itself.

How do you get around Goole?

Goole station is roughly a hundred metres from the town centre, which is unusual for a town this size and genuinely useful if you do not drive. Saltmarshe station is about 2.8 miles away and serves the Howden side of the area. Between them, rail is the main way of getting out of Goole without a car.

The town itself is compact and mostly flat, so walking covers a lot of ground. Supermarkets, pharmacies, the library and museum, pubs and the Junction cinema and theatre are all within about half a mile of the middle. Schools and the hospital sit a little further out but are still short journeys.

If you have a car, the surrounding villages such as Airmyn, Hook and Swinefleet are only a mile or two out, and Howden is under three miles. Parking and driving are straightforward in a town of this size. Do check current bus timetables for your own street before you commit, especially if you will rely on them for school runs or shift work.

What is there to do in Goole?

For a town of around 20,500, Goole does reasonably well. The Junction is a theatre and cinema in one, right in the centre, so a night out does not have to mean a long trip. The Library and Museum is on the doorstep too, and Howden Library is a short hop away.

Pubs are concentrated in the middle of town. City and County, including the Wetherspoons, The Old George, The Mulberry and The Counting House are all within a few minutes' walk of each other, which makes for an easy evening without worrying about getting home.

Outdoors, Bartholomew Gardens is the nearest green space, with West Park and Sandhall Park about a mile out and Hook Park and Saltmarshe Park further afield for a proper walk or bike ride. The flat countryside and riverside around the villages suit steady walking. What is work and the local economy like in Goole?

Across the East Riding of Yorkshire council area, 54.2% of adults are in work, a little below the England figure of 57.4%. That partly reflects the age profile: more than a quarter of residents in the wider area are 65 or over. Unemployment in the council area is low at 2.3%, against 3.5% for England.

Benefit claims tell a similar story. In September 2026, 2.2% of people aged 16 to 64 in the East Riding claimed unemployment-related benefits, compared with 4% across England. On paper, this is an area where people who want work tend to find it, though these figures cover the whole county and not Goole alone.

Locally, the port, the hospital, the schools and college, and the supermarkets in town are all visible sources of work. Goole College sits half a mile from the centre for training and courses. The railway station in town also makes commuting out a realistic option if your trade is based in a bigger centre.

How safe is Goole?

Like every town centre, Goole has police incidents logged each month. In August 2026 there were 168 within about a mile of the centre, made up of:

  • Anti-social behaviour reports13
  • Vehicle crime6
  • Bicycle theft3
  • Shoplifting21
  • Other theft8
  • Criminal damage12

Source: data.police.uk street-level crime. Counts cover a fixed one-mile radius around the centre, so busy high streets and stations always record far more than the residential streets around them, and most incidents are minor. Compare like with like: a similar-sized town centre, not a village.

Is Goole a good place for social housing tenants?

If Goole looks like the right fit, the practical next step is to put your own home on Mutual Home Exchange and name Goole as an area you want to move to. Swapping is often the most realistic route into a town like this, given how small a share of homes here are socially rented.

Write your advert as you would want to read someone else's. Be clear about the number of bedrooms, the type of property, heating, parking, garden, any stairs and what the neighbourhood is like. Honest detail saves everyone wasted journeys and tends to bring better enquiries.

Set Goole as a desired area, and consider adding the nearby villages such as Hook, Airmyn and Swinefleet, and Howden a couple of miles away, if you would be happy a short drive from the shops. Then check back regularly and message people first rather than waiting. When a swap looks promising, visit the street, see it on a weekday and a weekend, and get your landlord's permission before anything is agreed.
