What it's like to live in Altrincham

Altrincham is mostly an owner-occupier town in an owner-occupier borough. Across Trafford, 69% of homes are owned, 15.3% are privately rented and 15% are social rented, a little below the England figure of 17.1%. Council housing is a small slice of that at 4.2%, with housing associations holding 10.8%.

A register is not a straight queue, but it does show how tight supply is.

Families are well served for schools. Altrincham C of E Primary is about 0.2 miles out, with St Vincent's Catholic Primary and Navigation Primary close behind, and Stamford Park Primary a little over half a mile away. For older children, North Cestrian School and Loreto Grammar are both around 0.2 miles from the centre, with Wellington School under a mile. Brentwood Special School is under two miles for children who need specialist provision. Always check catchments and admissions with Trafford Council before you commit to a swap.

Across the wider Trafford area, 20.7% of residents are under 16, above the England figure of 18.6%. It is a council area with a young, family-heavy feel, and that shows in demand for places.

Outside school, Altrincham Library is a two-minute walk from the centre, with Hale, Timperley and Brooklands libraries within a few miles. Community centres including The Hub and St George's Old School Building give you somewhere local for groups and activities.

Altrincham station is the anchor, roughly a quarter of a mile from the town centre, with Navigation Road just over half a mile away and Hale about three quarters of a mile. Between them they give you a proper choice of rail journeys without needing to drive to get started.

Buses run from Station House and stops by Sainsbury's, with more at Hale Station, so the station area works as a single interchange for most trips. That matters if you are juggling school runs, shifts and appointments without a car.

On foot, the town centre is genuinely walkable: shops, chemists, library, cinemas and medical centres are mostly within half a mile of each other. Drivers have the M56 corridor nearby for trips out towards Cheshire and the airport side of Manchester, though town centre parking and traffic at peak times are the usual trade-off. Plenty of households here manage with one car, or none.

For a town of this size, Altrincham punches above its weight for going out. There are two cinemas in the centre, the Everyman and the Vue, both within a short walk. Around them sit a good spread of pubs and bars, including West Beverly, The Beacon, Alibi and Jack In The Box, plus Reserve Wines. It is more relaxed evenings out than late-night clubbing; if you want proper nightlife you will be travelling.

Fitness options are plentiful and varied: PureGym Altrincham, The Box Out Side, The Strength Collective, Altytude Fitness and The Wellness Space are all clustered within a couple of hundred metres of the centre, so there is something at most budgets.

For shopping, the Stamford Quarter is on the doorstep and Altrincham Retail Park is under a mile, with Brookway Retail Park and Stanley Square a few miles out. Add the library, the Community Orchard and community venues like Oyez Arts and Bowdon Parish Centre, and there is enough to fill a weekend without leaving town.

Trafford is one of the stronger local economies in the North West on paper. Across the council area, 59.9% of adults are in work, above the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment sits at 3% against 3.5% nationally. Benefit claimant figures for August 2026 tell a similar story, at 3% of 16 to 64 year olds compared with 4% across England.

In Altrincham itself, much of the visible work is in the town centre: retail across the Stamford Quarter and the supermarkets, hospitality in the many bars and restaurants, health services around the wellbeing centre and medical practices, and the schools and libraries.

The bigger picture is that the town's rail links open up a much wider job market than the town centre alone. Plenty of people here commute rather than work locally. If your job is shift-based or based across Greater Manchester, being a short walk from the station is worth a lot.
