What it's like to live in Sale

Sale is a busy, well-kept town in Trafford, in Greater Manchester's leafier south-western edge. It has the feel of a proper town centre rather than a suburb, with a shopping centre, a library and plenty of pubs on the doorstep. It suits families and anyone who wants green space close by, with Worthington Park and Walkden Gardens both within walking distance.

"I'd move here" adds Sale to the areas on your listing, so homes here are matched to you first.

Sale sits in the borough of Trafford, south-west of Manchester city centre and north of Altrincham. Stretford, Urmston and Chorlton are all close, and the wider Trafford council area is home to around 235,000 people. Sale itself is a sizeable town, recorded at roughly 134,000 people in the 2011 census for the wider area it covers.

People move here for the combination of a working town centre and easy reach of bigger places. The Trafford Centre and Trafford Palazzo are about three miles away, and Altrincham is under three miles for cinemas and health services.

For council and housing association tenants, the draw is usually the schools and the position. Trafford has a strong reputation for secondary education and several of its well-known schools are within a mile or so of Sale centre. Add hospitals within three miles and a decent spread of green space, and it is easy to see why Sale is a place people try to stay in once they land here.

How do you get around Sale?

Sale centre is genuinely walkable. The supermarkets, pharmacies, library and shopping centre are all clustered within a few hundred metres, so a lot of everyday errands can be done on foot without needing a car or a bus fare.

For rail, the nearest stations are a journey away rather than on the doorstep: Navigation Road is about 2.2 miles, Humphrey Park 1.9 miles, Urmston 2 miles and Trafford Park 2.1 miles. Chassen Road is around 2.4 miles. That makes them realistic for a commute if you can combine them with a bus, a bike or a lift, but less so for a quick hop.

Is Sale a good place for social housing tenants?

If Sale looks like the right fit, the practical step is to put your own home on Mutual Home Exchange and name Sale, or the M33 postcode district, as an area you want to move to. Listings are free for council and housing association tenants, and the more detail you give about your home, the easier it is for someone to picture living there.

Good photos help, and so does honesty about the things people always ask: how many bedrooms, which floor, whether there is a garden or parking, and what your rent and landlord are. If you are flexible on nearby areas such as Stretford, Urmston or Timperley, add them too. It widens your chances without ruling Sale out.

Once you are listed, keep an eye on new matches and reply quickly when someone gets in touch. Visit before you decide, walk the streets at different times of day, and check school admissions and your travel to work. Both landlords have to approve any exchange, so start those conversations early rather than leaving them to the end.
