What it's like to live in Borehamwood

There is a good spread of primary schools within a short walk. St Teresa's Primary is barely a few minutes away, with Yavneh Primary, Monksmead School, Cowley Hill Primary and Nursery, and Woodlands Primary all within half a mile of the centre.

For older children, Hertswood Academy, Yavneh College and Elstree Screen Arts Academy are all close by, with Haberdashers' Girls' School under two miles and Mill Hill County High School a little further. Check admissions and catchments directly, as popular schools here fill up.

For days out with children, there is Ducks Lake and the trampoline park at Jump In by AirHop, plus community centres at Maxwell Park and Aberford Park that run local activities. Across Hertfordshire, 19.9% of residents are under 16, slightly above the England average, so this is a county with plenty of young families.

Elstree & Borehamwood station is about half a mile from the centre and is the main link out, with Radlett station under three miles away as an alternative. Trains are the usual choice for commuting into London, and plenty of people here do it daily.

Buses are easy to pick up in the town itself. Stops at the Civic Offices, Elstree Studios and Furzehill Road are all within a short walk of the centre, so you are not stranded if you do not drive.

Borehamwood is also a walkable town. The shops, library, cinema, gyms and several parks all sit within half a mile of each other, which makes a real difference if you are doing the school run and the shopping on foot. If you do drive, you are close to the northern edge of London, though town-centre parking can be tight at busy times.

For a town of its size, Borehamwood is not short of things to fill a weekend. Reel Cinema is in the centre, and there are several pubs and bars within a few minutes' walk, including The Glass House, Good Companion and Raquel's Kitchen.

Parks are a strong point. Clarendon Park and Maxwell Park are both close to the centre, Ducks Lake is nearby, and there is even a small green with benches outside Elstree Studios if you just want to sit out.

For exercise, The Venue Leisure Centre and PureGym Borehamwood cover the basics, with smaller independent studios like Ajfitness and Astrotough Fitness for something different. Borehamwood Library and the 96 Shenley Road Community Hub are useful free spaces. For bigger shopping trips, The Spires is under three miles away, and Battlers Green Farm makes a decent local outing.

Hertfordshire does well on work. Across the county, 62.4% of adults are in employment against 57.4% for England, and unemployment sits at 3.1% compared with 3.5% nationally. Benefit claims tied to unemployment ran at 3% of working-age people in August 2026, below the England figure of 4%.

Locally, Elstree Studios is the name everyone knows, and the town centre supports plenty of retail, health and service jobs, from Tesco Extra to the medical centres and pharmacies dotted along Shenley Road.

Many residents commute. The train from Elstree & Borehamwood opens up London, which widens your options considerably if your work is there. That flexibility is one of the main reasons people choose to move here.

Housing in Borehamwood is mostly post-war estates and low-rise flats, mixed in with newer builds. Across Hertfordshire, 17.7% of homes are social rented, split roughly evenly between council at 8.3% and housing association at 9.3%. That is a shade above the England average of 17.1%.

Owner-occupation dominates at 64.6%, with 16.6% privately rented. In practice that means social homes are in demand and turnover is slow, which is exactly why a mutual exchange can be the realistic route in.

The age profile is balanced: 27% of Hertfordshire residents are aged 25 to 44 and 17% are 65 or over. Borehamwood itself feels mixed in age and background, with a long-established Jewish community reflected in local schools.
