Housing in Failsworth runs from red-brick terraces near the main road to post-war semis and estate housing further out. Most families here will have several realistic choices within a short walk, which takes a lot of stress out of the morning.

For secondary, St Matthew's RC High is under a mile. Laurus Ryecroft, Oasis Academy Oldham, Droylsden Academy and Newman Catholic College are all within just over two miles, so there is genuine choice across different types of school.

Outside school, there are parks at Lord Lane, Lower and Higher Memorial and Nuthurst, plus Failsworth Library and Life Long Centre for rainy days. Newton Heath Sure Start Children's Centre and The Hub Moston are both under a mile for younger children and family support.

Buses are the backbone. Failsworth bus station is about half a mile from the centre, with further stops at Hollinwood, Assheton Road and Nuthurst Road all within a mile. Services run along the Manchester-Oldham corridor, which makes getting to either town straightforward without a car.

For trains, Moston is the nearest station at 1.1 miles, with Mills Hill, Fairfield and Gorton all under three miles. None of them is on your doorstep, so most people pair a bus or a walk with the train rather than stepping straight onto a platform.

If you drive, you are well placed for Manchester, Oldham, Ashton and Middleton, though the main road gets heavy at peak times. On foot, the shops, library, pharmacies and several schools sit within half a mile of the centre, so a lot of errands can be done without any transport at all.

Failsworth is more pub-and-park than nightlife. The Mowbray Arms, Bricklayers Arms, The Mare and Foal, The Millgate and The Crown and Cushion are all within a few minutes of the centre, and locals tend to have a favourite they stick with.

For exercise, there is a decent cluster of small gyms and studios nearby, including The Trilogy Studio, WOWS Studio, Active Fitness and Failsworth Fitness 24-7. Nothing enormous, but enough to find something that suits you without travelling.

Bigger days out mean heading a short distance. Cineworld at Ashton-under-Lyne is 2.6 miles away, and for shopping there is Harpurhey Shopping Centre at two miles, Phoenix Village Mall, M Park Lime Square and Snipe Retail Park all within three. Central Manchester and its bars and venues are close enough for a night out and a bus or train home.

Failsworth's position between two big centres is its main economic asset. Plenty of people here work in Manchester, Oldham, Ashton or the surrounding industrial estates rather than in the town itself, and commuting out is normal.

The figures for the wider Oldham council area are honest about the challenges. Just 52.5% of adults are in work, below the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment sits at 4.1% against 3.5% nationally. Benefit claimants related to unemployment stood at 6.5% of working-age people in August 2026, compared with 4% across England.

Locally, the supermarkets, schools, pharmacies, care services and the library are steady employers on a small scale. If your work is in central Manchester or Oldham, Failsworth gives you a cheaper base within easy reach of both, which is why many people settle here rather than closer in.
