What it's like to live in Luton

There is a good choice of schools close by. Dallow Primary School is 0.4 miles away, with St Matthew's Primary, Tennyson Road Primary North Site and the Hillborough infant and junior schools all within 0.6 miles.

For older children, Al Hikmah School sits half a mile away, and Chiltern Academy, Denbigh High School and the Avenue Centre for Education are all under a mile. Active Support Education Centre is about a mile out.

Luton is a young borough. Nearly a quarter of people across the council area are under 16, well above the England figure of 18.6%. That shows in the schools, the parks and the community centres, and it means your children are unlikely to be the only new faces.

This is one of the easiest towns in the region to live in without a car. Luton station is about 0.2 miles from the town centre, with Luton Airport Parkway a mile away and the DART running up to the airport terminal.

Buses are just as close. The Luton Station Interchange has several stands within 0.2 miles, and there are stops like Galaxy Centre right on your doorstep. If you rely on buses for the school run, work shifts or hospital trips, you will find few places better served.

Walking covers most daily errands here. Shops, pharmacies, the library and parks are all inside half a mile, which keeps costs down when money is tight.

Green space is nearer than you might expect in a town centre. St George's Square and Hat Gardens are a couple of minutes away, and Brantwood Park, The Moor and New Town Park are all around 0.4 miles.

Luton Central Library is 0.1 miles from the centre, with the University of Bedfordshire Library nearby and branches at Stopsley and Leagrave. Cineworld Luton is a short walk, and there is a cluster of gyms including The Gym Group and Bannatyne Health Club.

Evenings are lively. Bars and late venues like Kanki's, Webs N Roots, After 8 and Kumba Lounge sit close together in the centre. Handy if you want it, noisy if you live above it.

Across the Luton council area, 57.2% of adults are in work, almost exactly the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment is higher though, at 5.3% against 3.5% nationally, and 6.6% of working-age people were claiming unemployment-related benefits in August 2026 compared with 4% in England.

The practical upside of living in LU1 is reach. With the station on your doorstep you can look for work well beyond the town, and the airport area is a mile or so away.

Retail and services dominate the centre itself, with the shopping centre, Bury Park Arcade, Luton Retail Park and Hatters Way nearby.

Social renting is slightly below the national picture here. Across the Luton council area, 16.4% of homes are socially rented, split between council at 10.8% and housing associations at 5.6%, against 17.1% for England. Owner occupation is 53.9% and private renting is high at 29%.

The town skews young and working-age. Just 11.7% of residents across the borough are 65 or over, compared with 18.4% nationally, while 30.4% are aged 25 to 44.

Be honest with yourself about the crime figures. Around 1,016 crimes were recorded within about a mile of the centre in July 2026, most commonly violence, anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime. Town centres always record more, but it is worth walking the streets before you commit.
