What it's like to live in Luton

Central Luton is mostly older terraces and flats, including homes above and behind the shopping streets. Space is tighter than in the outer estates, and gardens are not a given, so check what you are getting.

Social housing is a smaller share here than you might expect. Across the council area, 16.4% of homes are socially rented, just under the England figure of 17.1%, split between 10.8% council and 5.6% housing association. Owner occupation is 53.9% and private renting is high at 29%.

The population skews young and working age: 30.4% are aged 25 to 44 and only 11.7% are 65 or over, against 18.4% nationally. That gives central Luton a busy, youthful feel, with lots of families and plenty of turnover.

There is a good spread of primary schools close by. Dallow Primary School is about four hundred metres away, with St Matthew's Primary, Tennyson Road Primary North Site and the Hillborough infant and junior schools all within about six hundred metres. Walking to school is genuinely realistic from most of LU1.

For older children, Al Hikmah School, Chiltern Academy and Denbigh High School are all within a mile, and the Avenue Centre for Education and Active Support Education Centre are nearby too. Check current admissions and inspection reports yourself before you decide, as places in popular schools go quickly.

Luton is a young town. Across the council area, 23.3% of residents are under 16, well above the England figure of 18.6%, so your children will not be short of company. Parks such as Brantwood Park, New Town Park and Hat Gardens give you somewhere to go without a journey.

Transport is the strongest thing LU1 has going for it. Luton station is about a quarter of a mile away, so you can be on a train without needing a car at all. Luton Airport Parkway is roughly a mile off, with the DART link running on to the airport terminal.

Buses are just as handy. Luton Station Interchange has several stands within a couple of hundred metres, and the Galaxy Centre stop is closer still. If you rely on buses for school runs, work or hospital appointments, living this close to the interchange saves a lot of standing about in the rain.

On foot, the centre is flat and compact, and most everyday errands can be done without transport. If you do drive, expect town-centre parking to be tighter and pricier than in the outer estates, and factor in the vehicle crime figures.

For a town centre, there is plenty. Cineworld Luton is a couple of minutes away, and Frasers Plus Luton anchors the main shopping, with Bury Park Arcade, Luton Retail Park and Hatters Way Shopping Park all within a couple of miles for bigger trips.

If you exercise, you are spoilt: The Gym Group Luton, Bannatyne Health Club and Spa, Ultimate Athlete MMA and Real Legends Gym are all within a short walk. Luton Central Library is right on the doorstep, with Stopsley and Leagrave libraries further out and the University of Bedfordshire library nearby.

Nightlife is a real feature of central Luton, with places like Kanki's Turkish Meze and Cocktail Bar, Flame Bar and Nightclub, Kumba Lounge and After 8 close together. Great if you want it, less great if your bedroom window faces it. Community House, Luton activity hub and several church halls run things closer to home.

Across the Luton council area, 57.2% of adults are in work, almost identical to the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment is higher though, at 5.3% against 3.5% nationally, and 6.6% of 16 to 64 year olds were claiming unemployment-related benefits in August 2026, compared with 4% in England.

What LU1 gives you is access. Luton Airport Parkway and the DART put the airport within easy reach, and direct trains make commuting out of town practical without a car. The town centre itself has retail, hospitality and a university campus nearby.

If you are job hunting, being able to travel cheaply and quickly matters as much as what is on your street. On that measure, this postcode is a strong base.
