What it's like to live in Totton

Totton is a large, practical town on the eastern edge of the New Forest in Hampshire, sitting where the forest meets the water at the top of Southampton Water. It suits families and anyone who wants ordinary high street life with countryside and the city both close by. Testvale Park and Totton Library are right in the middle of things.

"I'd move here" adds Totton to the areas on your listing, so homes here are matched to you first.

Totton sits in the New Forest district of Hampshire, tucked between the national park to the west and Southampton to the east. The city centre is only a few miles away across the Test, and Redbridge marks the boundary where town turns into suburb.

People move here for the balance. You get a proper town with its own shops, schools and station, but the forest starts just beyond the western edge and Southampton's jobs, hospitals and shopping are a short hop in the other direction. For tenants coming from a city, it can feel calmer without feeling cut off.

The postcode district is SO40, which also covers nearby Calmore and the villages heading towards Ashurst. Housing is a mix of older terraces and streets of post-war and later estate homes. Social housing is a smaller share of the stock here than in England as a whole, which is worth knowing if you are planning a swap: good matches come up, but it pays to be flexible about which part of town you end up in.

Swapping to Totton: key facts

Can I swap my council or housing association home to Totton?

Yes, if you are already a council or housing association tenant. A register counts households who have applied, so it isn't a simple queue: some are already social tenants hoping to transfer, and people can be on more than one council's list.

What is it like to live in Totton?

Day to day, it feels like a working town rather than a chocolate-box village. The centre has an Asda, a Lidl and a Co-op Food within a few minutes of each other, plus pharmacies including AR Pharmacy Testwood and A R Pharmacy, so the weekly shop and a prescription rarely mean a trip out of town.

Green space is easy to come by. Testvale Park is almost on the doorstep, with Bramtoco Park, Testwood Recreation Ground and Redbridge Wharf Park all under a mile. Totton & Eling Community Centre and the Three Score Club give the town a social backbone, and Calmore and Hounsdown have their own halls. For health care, Western Community Hospital and Tatchbury Mount are both about two miles away, with Southampton General a little further.

What are the schools and family life like in Totton?

Totton is well served for schools. Within half a mile or so you have Lydlynch Infant School, Eling Infant School and Nursery, Forest Park School, Abbotswood Junior School and Oakfield Academy, so most families have a few realistic choices close to home. Always check current places and catchment with the council before you commit to a swap.

For older children, Testwood School is around half a mile away and Hounsdown School about a mile, with Redbridge Community School a mile off on the Southampton side. GLADE School and Forest Park School are closer still. Having several secondaries within walking or short bus distance is a real advantage for teenagers.

Outside school hours, Testvale Park and Testwood Recreation Ground are the obvious places to burn off energy, and Redbridge Wharf Park adds a waterside option. Totton Library is a few minutes from the centre, and Totton & Eling Community Centre runs the kind of local activities that help new families settle in quickly.

How do you get around Totton?

Totton station is about a third of a mile from the centre, on the line into Southampton and out towards the west. Redbridge station is under a mile away, and Ashurst New Forest, about two and a half miles off, is the gateway stop for the forest itself. Millbrook is also within three miles. Between them, these give you options without needing a car for a trip into the city.

By road, Totton sits close to the main routes between Southampton and the west, which is handy for commuting but means the roads around the town get busy at peak times. Parking in the centre is the usual town-centre juggle.

On foot, the centre is compact. The library, supermarkets, gyms, pharmacies and the community centre are all clustered within about a quarter of a mile, so a lot of everyday errands can be done without transport. Buses serve the town and the surrounding villages, which matters if you are heading somewhere the trains do not reach.

What is there to do in Totton?

Totton's pleasures are local rather than grand. The Keys, Six Barrels, the Elephant and Castle, The Attic and the Peg and Parrot are all within a few minutes of the centre, so there is a decent choice of places for a pint or a meal out without going into Southampton.

For exercise, Anytime Fitness and Totton Martial Arts and Wellness Centre are both right in town, with Snap Fitness, Southampton Barbell and PureGym within a few miles. Parks are the other half of the picture: Testvale Park on the doorstep, plus Bramtoco Park, Testwood Recreation Ground, Redbridge Wharf Park and Redbridge Pocket Park.

Totton Library sits in the centre, with Lordshill and Shirley libraries a couple of miles away towards Southampton if you want a change. Community centres at Totton & Eling, Hounsdown, Calmore and RISE host much of the town's clubs and classes. And of course the New Forest itself begins just west of town, which is the single biggest draw for anyone who likes walking.

What is work and the local economy like in Totton?

Totton's position shapes its job market. Southampton is close enough to commute to by train or road, which widens the range of work well beyond what a town this size could offer on its own. Locally, the retail, health and community services clustered around the town centre and nearby hospitals are visible employers.

Figures for the wider New Forest council area show 52.9% of adults in work, below the England average of 57.4%. That is largely about age rather than a weak economy: unemployment runs at just 2.1% against 3.5% for England, and unemployment-related benefit claims were 2.3% of working-age people in September 2026, compared with 4% nationally.

In plain terms, work is generally available in the district, but a lot of residents are retired. If you are moving for a job, check how your hours fit with the train times from Totton or Redbridge, especially for shift work where the last service matters.

How safe is Totton?

Like every town centre, Totton has police incidents logged each month. In August 2026 there were 132 within about a mile of the centre, made up of:

Anti-social behaviour reports29
Vehicle crime4
Bicycle theft1
Shoplifting11
Other theft6
Criminal damage8

Source: data.police.uk street-level crime. Counts cover a fixed one-mile radius around the centre, so busy high streets and stations always record far more than the residential streets around them, and most incidents are minor. Compare like with like: a similar-sized town centre, not a village.

Is Totton a good place for social housing tenants?

If Totton looks like the right fit, the practical next step is to get your own home listed. A clear, honest advert with decent photos, the number of bedrooms, the floor and the heating type does most of the work for you, and tenants looking to move out of the area will know straight away whether your place suits them.

Then set Totton as a desired area. You can add nearby places too, such as Calmore or the streets towards Redbridge and Ashurst, which widens your options without taking you far from the schools, the station and the forest.

Mutual exchange is a two-way deal, so be patient and keep your listing fresh. Message people whose homes interest you rather than waiting to be found, and be straight about what your property is and is not. Both landlords have to approve the swap, so check your tenancy is in good order before you start. Dozens of council homes in the district change hands this way each year, which shows it is a realistic route rather than a long shot.
