What it's like to live in Southampton

Primary choice is decent for a city centre. St Mary's C of E Primary and St Johns Primary & Nursery are both about half a mile away, with Springhill Catholic Primary, Banister Primary and Mount Pleasant Junior all within a mile. Check current admissions and Ofsted before you commit, as popular schools fill up.

For older children, St Mark's C of E School is just over a mile off and Upper Shirley High is under two miles, so a short bus ride covers secondary.

Family life here leans on the free stuff. The Central Parks chain, Houndwell and Palmerston are the everyday playgrounds, and Southampton Central Library is a short walk for homework and rainy afternoons. Best Start Family Hub Clovelly and Kingsland Community Centre are useful if you have little ones or want to meet people.

This is one of the easiest places in Hampshire to live without a car. Southampton Central station is about half a mile away, with Woolston, Millbrook, St Denys and Bitterne all within a mile and a half if you need a local hop.

Bus stops are practically outside the door. Vincent's Walk, Above Bar and Marlands stops are all within a couple of minutes' walk, which makes school runs, hospital appointments and shift work far simpler than in the suburbs.

Most daily errands are walkable anyway. Boots Pharmacy is around the corner, with several other chemists within half a mile, and there are GP and clinic services nearby. If you do keep a car, expect city-centre parking to be the main headache.

For a household on a budget, the centre earns its keep. West Quay and Marlands shopping centres are minutes away, and the parks give you free green space without a bus fare.

Cinemas are close: Showcase Cinema de Lux and Sonar Cinema are within a quarter of a mile, and Harbour Lights Picturehouse is under a mile if you prefer something smaller. Keeping fit is easy too, with The Gym Group Southampton Central, BH Live Active at The Quays, Inner City Boxing and the UK Shaolin Centre all nearby.

Nights out are on your doorstep, from the Ebb & Flow and Slug & Lettuce to Boom Battle Bar. Great if you want it, noisy if you do not.

Southampton is a working city with a wide mix of jobs. Across the council area, 57.9% of adults are in work, just above the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment sits at 4.1% against 3.5% nationally, and 4.2% of working-age people were claiming unemployment-related benefits in August 2026.

The age profile tells you something too. Around 30% of residents are aged 25 to 44 and nearly 16% are 16 to 24, well above the England average, so this is a young, busy city with plenty of shift and service work.

The real advantage for job-hunting is the transport. With Southampton Central and frequent buses within walking distance, you can look for work across a wide area without needing a car.

Across Southampton, 21.9% of homes are social rented, made up of 14.6% council and 7.3% housing association. That is higher than the England average of 17.1%, so there is a reasonable stock of social homes to swap into.

Private renting is big here too at 29.2%, with 47.7% owner-occupied. In practice that means mixed streets, lots of flats in and around the centre, and plenty of neighbours coming and going.

In SO14 itself, expect flats and maisonettes rather than houses with big gardens. If you need outside space, look at what is offered carefully and remember the parks a minute or two away do some of that work for you.
