What it's like to live in Billinge

Families are well served for primary schools. Chapel End Primary School and Nursery is about 0.1 miles away, Birchley St Mary's Catholic Primary 0.3 miles and Billinge St Aidans C of E Primary 0.4 miles. Having three primaries that close gives you real choice without a long school run.

For secondary, Nugent House School is very close at 0.2 miles, and mainstream options sit just outside the town: Outwood Academy Haydock 2.3 miles, Up Holland High School 2.4 miles, Cowley International College 2.5 miles and Cansfield High School 2.7 miles. Most families will be looking at a bus or car trip, so check catchment and admissions carefully.

For time outdoors there's the Millennium Garden in the centre, Billinge Recreation Ground and John Eddleston Playing Fields at 0.3 miles, Bluebell pond at 0.5 and Bankes Park at 0.6.

Billinge has no station of its own. The nearest is Garswood, about 1.6 miles away, with Orrell at 2.5 miles, Bryn at 2.6, Upholland at 2.7 and St Helens Central at around 3 miles. That's walkable for some, a short bus or car trip for others, so it's worth testing the journey before you commit.

Buses run from stops at Chapel Brow on Main Street, roughly half a mile from the centre, with Garswood Interchange and Higher Lane about 1.6 miles out. Check the specific routes and times for where you actually need to get to, especially early mornings and evenings.

A car makes life easier here, particularly for bigger shops and hospital appointments. But plenty of everyday things, the shop, chemist, schools, parks and pubs, are within a short walk of the middle of Billinge.

Billinge is more about the outdoors and the local than big attractions. The parks and playing fields are the everyday draw, and Bluebell pond makes a pleasant short walk. The pubs give the place its social heart, with four within half a mile of the centre.

For exercise beyond walking, Libby-Mae Fitness Studio is about 0.4 miles away, CM Fitness 1.5 miles, and Dolce Studios, Winstanley Tennis Club and Axe & Hammer Fitness all sit within about 2.4 miles.

Community life runs through halls and centres nearby: Park Farm Community Centre at 1.2 miles, Seneley Green Community Hall at 1.7 and Chain Lane Community Centre at 1.8. Lucem House Community Cinema Plus+ is around 2.9 miles away, and Haydock Library, St Helens Central Library and Ashton In Makerfield Library are all within three miles.

Across the wider St Helens council area, 54.9% of adults are in work, a little below the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment at the 2021 census was 3.1%, slightly lower than England's 3.5%, and benefit claims among 16 to 64 year olds stood at 3.7% in August 2026, again just under the England figure of 4%.

Billinge itself is small and mainly residential, so most people travel out to work. St Helens town centre is about three miles away, and the train stations at Garswood, Orrell, Bryn and Upholland open up the wider Merseyside and Greater Manchester job market.

There are some local employers close at hand, including schools, Fairfield Independent Hospital about 1.7 miles away and the shops and pubs in the town.

Billinge is mostly an owner-occupier place, and that's true of the wider borough too: across St Helens, 64.2% of homes are owned, 19.7% are social rented and 15.1% privately rented. The social rented share is a bit above the England average of 17.1%, with housing associations holding more of it than the council.

Rents in the St Helens area are among the more affordable in the country. Average weekly social rents in 2024/25 were about £92 for a one bed, £104 for a two bed and £116 for a three bed.
