What it's like to live in Bishop's Waltham

There is a decent spread of schools for a town this size. Bishop's Waltham Infant School and Bishop's Waltham Junior School are both about a third of a mile from the centre, so many families can do the school run on foot. Slightly further out you have Swanmore C of E Primary at 1.6 miles, St John the Baptist C of E Primary at 1.9 miles and Upham C of E Primary at 2.1 miles.

For time outdoors, North Pond is a few minutes away, with Victoria Road Green, Bishop's Waltham Moors, Hoe Road Recreational Ground and a skate park all within half a mile.

Bishops Waltham Library is a short walk from the square, handy for rainy afternoons and homework. Across Hampshire, 17.8% of residents are under 16, a shade below the England figure of 18.6%.

Bishop's Waltham has no railway station, so plan around buses, driving and walking. The Square stop sits right in the middle of town, with further stops at Waltham Grange and St Barnabas Church about a mile and a half out.

If you drive, you are well placed between Winchester, Southampton and Portsmouth, and the surrounding lanes open onto the wider Hampshire countryside. If you do not drive, check the bus timetables carefully for the journeys you make most, especially evenings and Sundays, before you commit to a swap.

Within the town itself, walking works well. Shops, the library, schools, the pharmacies and several parks all sit within about half a mile of the centre, which cuts down on how often you need a lift or a fare.

For a small town, the fitness scene is surprisingly busy. Within half a mile you have Elevate Community Fitness, Dsx Fitness, 365 Fitness and Ludus Fitness & Gym, plus Phoenix School of Martial Arts running freestyle TaeKwonDo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Eating and drinking is centred on the square and the streets around it: The Bunch of Grapes, Banks Bar Bistro, No.60 Coffee & Wine Bar, Giorgio's Mediterranean Restaurant and Bar and Friends Refined Indian Cuisine are all within a short stroll.

Community life leans on halls rather than big venues. Jubilee Hall and White Hart Stables are both a couple of minutes from the centre, with Priory Park Pavilion close by and Shedfield Study Centre and Curdridge Reading Room a short drive out.

Bishop's Waltham sits within Hampshire, and the wider county figures point to a strong labour market. Some 59.7% of adults are in work, above the England average of 57.4%, and unemployment is 2.5% against 3.5% nationally.

Benefit claims tell the same story. In August 2026, 2.4% of 16 to 64 year olds in Hampshire were claiming unemployment-related benefits, compared with 4% across England.

In practice, many people living here travel out for work rather than working in the town itself. If you are moving without a car, it is worth mapping your commute by bus before you say yes to a swap, and being realistic about how long it will take.
