What it's like to live in Fareham

Fareham is an owner-occupier town. Around 78.5% of homes are owned outright or on a mortgage, 12.6% privately rented and just 8.1% social rented, split between council at 4.6% and housing association at 3.5%. That is well below the England average of 17.1%, so social homes here are in short supply and a mutual exchange is often the most realistic way in.

Fareham Borough Council is by far the biggest social landlord with around 2,408 homes, followed by Vivid Housing with 919, Hyde Housing with 356, Swaythling Housing Society with 284 and Abri with 135. Average weekly social rents in 2024/25 were about £101 for a one bed, £119 for two beds and £138 for three.

For scale, 293 households were on the council's housing register at 31 March 2025, 300 social homes were let through the council in 2024-25 and 11 council homes changed hands by mutual exchange. The register is not a simple queue, and swapping runs alongside it.

Primary choice is decent and close. Harrison Primary School and Redlands Primary School are both well under a mile, with Uplands Primary School just under a mile. Fareham & Gosport Primary SCITT and the Pioneer Teaching School Alliance are also based nearby. For secondary, Cams Hill School is 0.7 miles away, Henry Cort about two miles and Bridgemary School just over two; Boundary Oak and Meoncross are independent options.

For days out with children you have Civic Gardens on the doorstep, Park Lane Recreation Ground and North Park both around 0.6 miles, plus The Garden Of Reflection and Uliginous Island. Fareham Library is a short walk from the centre and Bridgemary, Portchester and Stubbington libraries are all within three miles.

The Fareham & Gosport Family Centre and Broadlaw Community Centre give a base for groups and support. Under-16s make up 16.4% of the borough, slightly below the England figure, so it is a family town with an older edge.

Fareham railway station is about 0.7 miles from the centre, with Portchester station a little over two miles away. That puts Portsmouth, Southampton and connections further afield within reach without a car, which matters if you do not drive or you share one vehicle in the household.

Buses are well covered close in. There are stops at Trinity Street, three around the Station Roundabout and rail station, and one out at Collingwood Retail Park. Routes link the town with Gosport, Portchester and the surrounding villages.

On foot, the town centre is the town's strong point: shops, chemists, the library, the cinema and Civic Gardens are all within about a tenth of a mile of each other, so a walk into town covers most errands. Drivers get quick access to the wider south coast road network and the retail parks, though the centre can be busy at peak times and parking costs money.

The Reel Cinema in the town centre is the main evening fixture, with Fareham Live nearby for events. Pubs are plentiful and close together: the Ironmaster, Antonio's, The Crown Inn, The Red Lion and Embers & Ice are all within a short walk. Nightlife is limited beyond that, so a bigger night out usually means heading to Portsmouth or Southampton by train.

For exercise there is real choice within a few streets, including Snap Fitness, OriGym Hampshire, Strength-Tec Gym, A.C.T. Self Defence and Glow Pole Fitness & Flow. Parks like North Park and Park Lane Recreation Ground cover the free option.

Shopping is a genuine strength. Fareham Shopping Centre and Market Quay sit in the middle of town, with Collingwood Retail Park just over a mile out, Portchester Precinct and Brockhurst Gate Retail Park within three miles. The Crafty Makery and Gateway Church Fareham add somewhere to meet people, which helps if you are new.

Employment in the borough is solid. Around 58.2% of adults are in work, just ahead of the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment sits at 2.2% against 3.5% nationally. Unemployment-related benefit claims were 2% of working-age people in August 2026, half the England rate. On paper, this is a town where finding work is easier than in many places.

Locally, retail and services in the town centre and the retail parks are visible employers, along with health services including the Bupa Health Centre, Uplands House and HMS Collingwood Medical Centre. Defence has a long presence in the area.

Many people commute. The train station makes Portsmouth and Southampton practical daily journeys, and the road links open up jobs across south Hampshire. If your work is flexible or you are job-hunting, that reach matters more than what sits on Fareham's own high street.
