What it's like to live in Emsworth

Emsworth Primary School is half a mile from the centre and St James C of E Primary School is 0.6 miles. Slightly further out you have Westbourne Primary at 1.4 miles, plus Southbourne Infant School and Southbourne Infant and Junior School, also around 1.4 miles.

For secondary, Bourne Community College is the nearest at 1.1 miles, with Warblington School at 1.4 miles and Havant Academy at 2.5 miles. Always check current places and catchment with the council before you commit to a swap.

For days out with children, Brook Meadow is 0.1 miles away, Emsworth Park half a mile, Nore Barn Woods 0.8 miles and Hollybank Recreation Ground 0.9 miles. Emsworth Library is a two-minute walk from the centre, with Southbourne Library 1.2 miles away.

Across the wider Havant council area, 17.1% of residents are under 16, a little below the England figure of 18.6%.

Emsworth station is about 0.2 miles from the centre, which is the big draw for anyone without a car. Southbourne is 1.3 miles east and Warblington 1.4 miles west, and Havant, a larger station, is around two miles away. Nutbourne is a little further at 2.4 miles.

Local bus stops include Beach Road about half a mile away, East Street just over a mile, and St John's Church at 1.3 miles, so you have options without walking far.

The centre itself is flat and compact, and most of what you need day to day is within half a mile. If you drive, you are close to the main routes between Portsmouth and Chichester, though parking in the old streets can be tight.

The water and the green space are the heart of it. Brook Meadow, the Mill Pond, Emsworth Park and Nore Barn Woods are all within a mile, so walking, birdwatching and just getting outside cost nothing.

The pub scene is unusually good for a town this size. The Crown Inn, The Ship Inn, The King's Arms, The Coal Exchange and JJ's are all within a few hundred metres of each other.

If you like to train, Emsworth Gym is right in the centre, with The Balance Zone, Pinkfiit, Innovations Fitness and Dragon Health & Fitness all within a mile. For bigger shopping trips, The Oakwood Centre is 1.7 miles away, The Meridian Centre two miles and Central Retail Park 2.1 miles.

Emsworth Community Centre and Verity's Booknook sit in the middle of town, and there is a Men's Shed over at Southbourne.

Across the Havant council area, 54.8% of adults are in work, just under the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment is lower than the national picture at 2.9%, and in August 2026 3.3% of 16 to 64 year olds were claiming unemployment-related benefits, compared with 4% across England.

Locally, work tends to mean commuting. The train from Emsworth and the bigger interchange at Havant open up the wider south coast, and the shopping centres and retail parks a couple of miles away are employers in their own right.

Healthcare is another presence nearby, with Spire Portsmouth Hospital 1.6 miles away and Elmleigh Hospital 1.8 miles.

Emsworth is a small town within a borough where home ownership dominates.
