What it's like to live in Waterlooville
Waterlooville is a busy Hampshire town in the Borough of Havant, sitting just north of Portsmouth. It feels practical rather than pretty: a pedestrianised centre, big supermarkets, familiar pubs and plenty of everyday services close together. It suits families and anyone who wants shops on the doorstep, with Staunton Country Park and Queen Alexandra Hospital both within a few miles.
"I'd move here" adds Waterlooville to the areas on your listing, so homes here are matched to you first.
Waterlooville sits in south east Hampshire, inside the Borough of Havant. Portsmouth lies a short way south, Havant itself is under three miles east, and Cosham and Bedhampton are close by. The town grew from a small settlement of only around 1,250 people in the 1930s into one of the main centres in a borough that now holds about 124,208 residents.
People move here for the balance. You get a proper town centre with supermarkets, a library, gyms and pubs, but you are also within easy reach of the coast, the South Downs and the jobs and hospitals of the Portsmouth area. The A3 corridor runs north towards Petersfield and London, which matters if work or family pull you in that direction.
For social housing tenants, Waterlooville is worth a look because it is part of a borough with a decent spread of council and housing association homes, and because so much is reachable without a long journey. It is not a tourist town and it does not pretend to be. It is a place where normal life is straightforward.

What is housing like in Waterlooville and who lives there?
Havant borough has a slightly higher share of social housing than England as a whole: 18.6% of homes are socially rented, split almost evenly between council at 9.4% and housing association at 9.2%, against 17.1% nationally. Owner occupation is high at 67.9%, with 12.4% privately rented, so social tenants are a sizeable but minority group.
The largest social landlord by far is The Guinness Partnership with 3,767 homes, followed by Vivid Housing with 1,344. Southern Housing, Aster Communities and The Swaythling Housing Society also manage smaller numbers locally. Average weekly social rents in 2024/25 were £104 for a one bed, £122 for two beds and £143 for three.
The population skews older than the national picture: 24.3% are 65 or over compared with 18.4% across England, while 17.1% are under 16. Demand for social homes is real, with 1,486 households on the council's register at March 2025 and 209 homes let through the council that year, which is one reason a mutual exchange can be a faster route.

Council waiting list and lettings
Households on the register by the size of home they need.
That is roughly 7.1 households waiting for every social home let in a year. Mutual exchange doesn't use the waiting list: if you already have a council or housing association home, swapping with another tenant can be a quicker way to move to Waterlooville.
A register counts households who have applied, so it isn't a simple queue: some are already social tenants hoping to transfer, and people can be on more than one council's list.

Away from the centre, the streets turn residential and quieter, running out towards Purbrook, Cowplain and the newer Berewood area. Berewood Town Park is half a mile away and The Bog about a mile, so there is green space without a long trek. Community halls at Newlands, Deverell Hall and the Purbrook Centre give local groups somewhere to meet. It is an ordinary, workaday town, and that is its strength.

How do you get around Waterlooville?
Waterlooville has no railway station of its own, so trains mean a trip out of town. Bedhampton is about 2.3 miles away, Havant 2.8 miles and Cosham around 3 miles. Havant is the bigger of the three, with services along the south coast and towards London, and Havant Bus Station sits right beside it, which makes it the main interchange for the area.
Buses are the everyday link, connecting Waterlooville with Havant, Cosham and Portsmouth and with nearby villages such as Purbrook, Cowplain and Horndean. Check the routes that serve your particular street before you commit, as frequency varies across the town.
By car, the A3 and A3(M) put Portsmouth, Petersfield and the M27 within reach, and Queen Alexandra Hospital is about 2.6 miles away. On foot, the centre is the strong point: shops, pharmacies, the library and several pubs are all within a few hundred metres of each other, and the pedestrianised precinct makes that easy with a pushchair. Outer estates are more car and bus dependent.

What is there to do in Waterlooville?

What is work and the local economy like in Waterlooville?
Across the Havant council area, 54.8% of adults are in work, a little below the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment stands at 2.9%, lower than the 3.5% England average, and unemployment-related benefit claims were 3.3% of working-age people in August 2026 against 4% nationally. In plain terms, slightly fewer people are in work here, but fewer are out of work and claiming, which partly reflects the older age profile.
Work in the area tends to come from retail and services in Waterlooville and Havant town centres, health and care around Queen Alexandra Hospital, Oak Park Community Clinic and Elmleigh Hospital, and schools across the borough.
Many residents also commute. Portsmouth is the obvious draw, reachable by bus or car, and trains from Havant, Bedhampton or Cosham open up Chichester, Southampton and London for those who need them. If you are moving for a particular job, time the journey at rush hour first, because the A3 and the roads into Portsmouth can be slow at peak times.
Figures are for the Havant council area, Census 2021 and ONS claimant count.
How safe is Waterlooville?
Like every town centre, Waterlooville has police incidents logged each month. In August 2026 there were 222 within about a mile of the centre, made up of:
Source: data.police.uk street-level crime. Counts cover a fixed one-mile radius around the centre, so busy high streets and stations always record far more than the residential streets around them, and most incidents are minor. Compare like with like: a similar-sized town centre, not a village.
Is Waterlooville a good place for social housing tenants?
If Waterlooville looks like the right fit, the practical next step is to put your own home on Mutual Home Exchange and add Waterlooville, or the PO7 area, to your list of desired areas. Listings work both ways: tenants here are looking too, and they will only find you if your home is visible.
Write your advert properly. Say how many bedrooms you have, which floor you are on, whether there is a garden, parking or a lift, who your landlord is and what your rent is. Photographs of real rooms, even untidy ones, get far more replies than none at all. Be honest about anything that needs work, as it saves wasted viewings.
It is worth widening your search to nearby Purbrook, Cowplain, Horndean and Havant as well, since they share many of the same schools, shops and bus routes. Once you find a match, both landlords must approve the swap before anyone moves. Ask about rent levels, tenancy type and any repairs outstanding early, so there are no surprises later on.
