What it's like to live in Portsmouth

Homes in PO1 lean towards flats and terraces, often Victorian and often converted. Big gardens are rare this close to the centre. Across the council area, 18% of homes are social rented, just above the England average of 17.1%, and 28.6% are privately rented, which is high.

Portsmouth City Council is by far the biggest social landlord with 15,716 homes, followed by Vivid Housing with 2,911, Southern Housing, Abri Group and The Swaythling Housing Society.

Average weekly social rents in the council area for 2024/25 were about £95 for a one bed, £109 for two beds and £121 for three beds. At 31 March 2025 there were 1,504 households on the council's housing register, and 1,203 social homes were let that year.

For a city-centre postcode, the choice of schools nearby is decent. ARK Ayrton Primary Academy, St John's Cathedral Catholic Primary School and Cottage Grove Primary School are all around half a mile, with Arundel Court Primary Academy just beyond. At secondary level, Priory School Southsea is about 0.6 miles and The Portsmouth Academy under a mile. There are independent options nearby too, including Portsmouth Grammar School.

Green space is close rather than plentiful. Victoria Park is the main one, roughly 0.2 miles away, with Ravelin Park, Gun House Green and Portsea Gate also within half a mile.

Around 18.3% of people in the council area are under 16, close to the England figure, so there are plenty of families here. Portsmouth Central Library, Portsea Library and the Carnegie Library are all handy for rainy days.

Central Portsmouth is one of the easier places in the South East to live without a car. Portsmouth & Southsea station is about a five-minute walk, with Portsmouth Harbour and Fratton both under a mile. Trains run inland and along the coast, and Hilsea station is a little over two and a half miles north.

Buses are everywhere. Stops at Station Street and City Shops South are within a couple of minutes' walk, linking the centre with the rest of the island and beyond.

Walking and cycling work well because the island is flat and small. Driving is the weak point: streets are narrow, parking is tight and permits matter, so check what comes with any home you're considering. Portsmouth Harbour is also the point for ferries across the water.

You will not be short of things to do. Gunwharf Quays is about half a mile away for shopping and the waterfront. For films there is Big Screen Portsmouth and No6 Cinema on your doorstep, plus Vue Cinema Portsmouth and the Southsea Cinema & Arts Centre a little further out.

Sport and fitness are well covered by Charter Community Sports Centre, Spinnaker Sports Centre, St Paul's Sports Hall, PureGym on Commercial Road and the Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy, all within walking distance.

Evenings are lively. Pubs like The Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Brewhouse & Kitchen and The Guildhall Village sit alongside clubs including Tokyo Joe's and The Astoria. Brilliant if you want a night out; worth thinking about if you want quiet at the weekend.

Portsmouth is a working port city and the centre is where a lot of the jobs are: retail at Cascades and Gunwharf Quays, hospitality, the university and healthcare. Portsmouth hospital is about 1.2 miles away.

In the wider council area, 57.2% of adults are in work, almost exactly the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment sits a little higher at 4.4% against 3.5% nationally, and benefit claimants among 16 to 64 year olds were 4.5% in August 2026, compared with 4% across England.

If you commute, the trains from Portsmouth & Southsea open up work further along the coast and inland, which matters if your job is outside the city.
