What it's like to live in Atherton

This is one of Atherton's strongest cards. Chowbent Primary and St Philip's CofE Primary are both around 0.2 miles from the centre. Meadowbank Primary School and Children's Centre and Parklee Community Primary are about 0.3 miles, and St Richards RC Primary is 0.4 miles. Five primaries inside half a mile means a realistic school run on foot.

For older children, Atherton High School is 0.4 miles away and Fred Longworth High School is under a mile. The Westleigh School, Westhoughton High and Bedford High are all within about two miles, so there's genuine choice.

For the day to day, there's Atherton Park and Central Park, plus People's Place nearby. Dorset Road Community Centre, Shakerley Community Centre and the Green Grass Centre are all within a mile for groups and activities. Across Wigan, 18.3% of residents are under 16, roughly in line with England.

Atherton station is about four minutes' walk from the centre, and Hag Fold station is roughly half a mile away on the other side of town. Daisy Hill is a mile and a half off, and Westhoughton station is within about two and a half miles. Having three stations that close is unusual for a town this size.

Buses run from St John Street and Market Street in the centre, with more stops at Car Bank Street and by Hag Fold station. Between the buses and the trains, getting out of Atherton without a car is realistic.

On foot, the town centre is small enough that most errands are a ten minute walk or less. The schools, the library, the supermarkets and the doctors are all clustered together. If you currently spend a fortune on bus fares just to reach a shop, that will change here.

Atherton's own offer is local and low key. There are parks to walk in, a library, and a decent handful of pubs in the centre including the Atherton Arms, the Kings Head, the Cabinet, Players Lounge and Barons Lounge. The Nuts and Bolts statue near the middle of town is a nod to the area's industrial past.

For gyms, Fit n Funky and Seddons Strength and Conditioning are both within a couple of hundred metres, with more options close by.

For a bigger night or a day out, Leigh is a little over two miles away. Leigh Film Factory and Leigh Spinners Mill are there, plus Spinning Gate Shopping Centre and Leigh Indoor Market. The Gables Shopping Centre is closer, about a mile and a half. Manchester itself is reachable by train if you want more.

Wigan's employment picture is close to the national average and slightly better in places. Census 2021 put 57.5% of adults in the borough in work, just above the England figure of 57.4%, with unemployment at 3.1% against 3.5% for England.

More recent benefit data for the borough, from August 2026, shows 3.6% of 16 to 64 year olds claiming unemployment-related benefits, compared with 4% across England.

Locally, the supermarkets, shops, schools and health services in and around the town centre are visible employers. Beyond that, the rail links matter most: three stations within walking or short bus distance open up jobs in Bolton, Manchester and beyond without needing a car. If your work is shift-based or based in the city, check the timetable before you commit.

Atherton is mostly older terraced and estate housing, typical of a Lancashire coalfield town. Across Wigan, 17% of homes are socially rented, which is almost exactly the England figure of 17.1%. Most of that is council housing at 14%, with 3% housing association.

Home ownership is high in the borough at 66.4%, and private renting is comparatively low at 15.9%. That means social tenants are a settled, established part of the community rather than a small minority, and estates here tend to have long-standing residents.

The age mix in Wigan is fairly balanced, with 25.8% aged 25 to 44 and 27.1% aged 45 to 64. In practice you get a mix of young families and people who've lived in the same streets for decades.
