What it's like to live in Bridgwater

There is a decent choice of primary schools close to the centre. Northgate Primary School, Westover Green Community School, St Joseph's Catholic Primary School and Eastover Community Primary School are all within about half a mile, which gives families options rather than one forced choice.

For older children, Robert Blake School is around half a mile away and Haygrove School is under a mile. The Bridge School has centres in the town too.

For days off, Blake Gardens and Victoria Park are both a short walk, with Brewery Field and The Meads, including its canal-side entrance, also nearby. Bridgwater Library is right in the centre, and Victoria Park Community Centre, Hamp Community Association and ReCreation Community Hub run local activities. Quayside Trampoline and Gymnastics Club is another option for energetic children.

Bridgwater has its own railway station, about three quarters of a mile from the centre, which puts you on the main line without needing to drive to a bigger town first. That is a real advantage for a town this size.

Buses are easy to pick up. There are stops on the High Street itself and a bus station a short walk away with several bays, so local and longer routes are covered without much walking between connections.

On foot, the centre is compact. Schools, parks, the library, supermarkets and the shopping centres are mostly within half a mile of each other, so a lot of errands can be done in one trip. If you drive, the town is well placed for getting out into Somerset and towards the motorway network, and parking is easier here than in a city.

For a town of this size, Bridgwater is well served for an evening out. Scott Cinemas is in the centre, and Somerset Film at The Engine Room adds something a bit different, part cinema, part community space.

Pubs are plentiful and close together, with The Duke, The Old Market and The Blake Arms among those within a few minutes of the middle. There is nightlife too, including The Palace Nightclub and Bliss, so you do not have to travel to a city for a late one.

If you like to keep active, there is a good spread of gyms, from PureGym Bridgwater and the YMCA to smaller independents like Muscle19 and Trimwise Fitness. The parks and the canal path are free alternatives and get plenty of use.

Across the wider Somerset council area, 56.6% of adults are in work, close to the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment sits at 2.3%, below the England average of 3.5%, and benefit claimants among 16 to 64 year olds were 2.6% in August 2026 against 4% for England.

That points to a reasonably steady local job market, though Somerset is a large county and Bridgwater is only part of the picture. The town's shops, supermarkets, schools and NHS services are all visible employers in their own right.

The railway station matters here as well. If your work or training is in another town, commuting by train from Bridgwater is realistic rather than a last resort.

In the Somerset council area, 13.7% of homes are socially rented, a little below the England figure of 17.1%. Most homes, 67.4%, are owned, with 17.7% privately rented, so social housing is in demand and swaps are worth pursuing properly.

Somerset Council is the largest social landlord with 9,682 homes, followed closely by Abri Group with 9,637, then LiveWest, Aster Communities and Magna Housing. Average weekly social rents across the area in 2024/25 were £94 for a one-bed, £109 for a two-bed and £120 for a three-bed.

The area skews slightly older than England as a whole: 24.8% are 65 or over compared with 18.4% nationally, and 16.8% are under 16. It is a settled place rather than a young, transient one.
