What it's like to live in Bridgwater

Social renting is less common in Somerset than nationally: 13.7% of homes across the council area, against 17.1% for England, with two thirds owner-occupied. So social homes are in demand.

The main landlords across the area are Somerset Council and Abri Group, each with around 9,600 homes, followed by LiveWest, Aster Communities and Magna Housing. Average weekly social rents in 2024/25 were £94 for a one bed, £109 for two and £120 for three.

The area skews slightly older than England overall, with 24.8% aged 65 and over. Somerset's housing register held 12,473 households in March 2025, and mutual exchange accounted for 150 council moves in 2024-25.

There's a good spread of primary schools close to the centre, including Northgate Primary, Westover Green Community School, St Joseph's Catholic Primary and Eastover Community Primary, all within about half a mile. Worth checking current places and Ofsted ratings yourself before you commit to a swap.

For older children, Robert Blake School and Haygrove School are both under a mile away, with The Bridge School running centres in the town too.

For days out of the house, The Meads and its canal-side entrance, Brewery Field and Victoria Park are all nearby, and Victoria Park Community Centre and Hamp Community Association run local activities. Bridgwater Library is a short walk from the High Street.

Bridgwater station is about 0.7 miles from the centre, which puts rail travel within reach without needing a car. Handy if you work or study elsewhere in Somerset or beyond.

Buses are a real strength here. There's a bus station with several bays a short walk from the shops, plus stops right on the High Street, so you can get around town and out to nearby villages without driving.

On foot, the centre works well. Shops, the library, the cinema and several parks sit within half a mile of each other. If you do drive, the town's position in central Somerset makes reaching Taunton and the wider county straightforward, and there's parking around the retail areas.

For a town this size, there's plenty. Scott Cinemas is right in the centre, and Somerset Film at The Engine Room offers something a bit different for film and creative projects.

Pubs are easy to come by close in: The Duke, The Old Market and The Blake Arms among them, with Bliss and The Palace Nightclub for later nights. It's a town where a night out doesn't need a taxi home.

If you like keeping active, PureGym, the YMCA, Muscle19 and Trimwise are all within half a mile, and Quayside Trampoline and Gymnastics Club is popular with children. Add the canal path and the parks and there's no shortage of free ways to fill a weekend.

Across the wider Somerset council area, 56.6% of adults are in work, close to the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment is lower at 2.3% against 3.5% nationally. Benefit claims tied to unemployment stood at 2.6% of working-age people in August 2026, below the England figure of 4%.

Bridgwater itself has a town-centre retail and service economy, with the shopping centres, supermarkets and health services all providing local jobs.

The train station and bus links widen your options if you need to travel for work rather than find it on your doorstep.
