What it's like to live in Bury

Housing in the Bury council area leans heavily towards owner-occupation at 66.9%, with 17.7% privately rented and 14.9% social rented. That social figure is below the England average of 17.1%, so social homes are in demand here.

Bury Metropolitan Borough Council is by far the biggest social landlord with 7,672 homes, followed by Onward Homes, Irwell Valley Housing Association, Great Places and Places for People Homes.

Day to day, families have Bury Library on the doorstep, Manchester Road Park for running about, and Castle Leisure Centre nearby. Around 20% of the borough's residents are under 16, a shade above the England average, so there are plenty of other young families about.

Bury Interchange is the main hub here, barely a few minutes' walk from the town centre, with further stops at Bury Market, The Rock and Moorgate Primary Care Centre. If you rely on buses, this is about as convenient as it gets in the borough.

On foot, the centre is easy going. The shopping centre, library, supermarkets, pharmacies and several schools are all within half a mile, so day-to-day errands rarely need a journey at all.

If you drive, you are near the town's car parks, including the Mill Gate Shopping Centre Car Park and disabled parking at The Rock. Being central cuts your mileage, though parking on residential streets near the middle of any town can be tight, so ask about it when you view.

For a town of this size, Bury centre packs a lot in. Vue Cinema Bury is under half a mile away, and the Mill Gate Shopping Centre and Bury Market keep the centre busy through the week.

If you like being active, Castle Leisure Centre is right in the middle, with smaller options like Silver's Fitness Centre, The Zone Fitness and a couple of self-defence and Krav Maga clubs nearby.

Evenings are sociable. There is a decent run of pubs and bars, including Hidden Bar, Forbidden Bar and Broad Street Social, plus late spots such as The House of Bridget and La Maison. For quieter days, Library Gardens, Gallipoli Garden and the Centre for Cultural Collections at Bury Library are all within a few minutes on foot.

In the Bury council area, 57.1% of adults are in work, almost exactly the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment sits at 3.2%, slightly below the 3.5% England average, while 4.4% of 16 to 64 year olds claimed unemployment-related benefits in August 2026, a little above England's 4%.

Locally, much of the work in the centre is in retail, shops and services, with the shopping centre, market, health practices and the town's pharmacies all employers in their own right. Bury College University Centre sits close to the middle of town if you are looking to retrain.

With the bus interchange on the doorstep, commuting out of Bury for work is realistic without a car.
