What it's like to live in Acton

Acton Primary School is 0.2 miles away, which is about as good as it gets for a village. If you want other options, Great Waldingfield VC Primary is 1.2 miles, Long Melford Primary and Woodhall Primary are both 1.8 miles, and Tudor Primary is 2.1 miles.

For secondary, Ormiston Sudbury Academy is the one within three miles, about two miles away. That means a bus or lift run for most teenagers, so factor it in.

For days out with children there is plenty of green space nearby: Chilton Hall at 1.4 miles, Melford Hall at 1.6, Deer Park at 1.7. Long Melford Library is two miles away and Sudbury Library 2.6, both useful for free rainy-day activities and holiday clubs.

There is a bus stop called Crown right in the village, 0.1 miles away, with more stops at White Horse just over a mile off and Bull at 1.9 miles. Buses are the main way to reach Sudbury without a car, so check the actual timetable for the routes you would need before you commit, especially evenings and Sundays.

Sudbury railway station is 2.6 miles away. It is a branch line, so it is worth looking up where the trains run to and how often, rather than assuming it is quick.

Be honest with yourself about distances. Most of the shops, doctors and the secondary school are one and a half to two and a half miles from Acton. That is fine by car or bus, and walkable for some, but harder with small children and heavy bags in winter.

Village life here is pub-shaped. The Crown is 0.1 miles from the heart of Acton, The White Horse 1.3 miles, The Swan at Little Waldingfield 1.8 miles, and The Bull and Long Melford Swan around 1.9 miles out.

For exercise, Sudbury Sports Centre and Zest Health and Fitness are about two miles away, with PureGym Sudbury at 2.1 miles and Vertex Pro Fitness at 1.8. There is a child-friendly mini trampoline class over at Long Melford too, which is handy if you want something that works around the kids.

Beyond that, Getz Cinemax is 2.4 miles away and Infinity Nightclub 2.5 miles, so a night out is possible without going far. Community groups meet at Sudbury Community Hub and the Community Association Old School, both under two miles.

Most work is in Sudbury and the surrounding towns rather than in Acton itself. The retail park, supermarket, health centre and schools nearby are the visible local employers within a couple of miles.

Across Suffolk as a whole, 56.5% of adults are in work, close to the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment is lower than average at 2.7% against 3.5% for England, and in August 2026 just 2.9% of 16 to 64 year olds claimed unemployment-related benefits, compared with 4% nationally.

Those are county-wide numbers, not Acton's alone. In practice, if you don't drive, your job options will depend heavily on what the buses to Sudbury can get you to and at what time.

Acton is a small village, and social housing is thin on the ground here compared with towns. Across Suffolk, 15% of homes are socially rented, 6.9% council and 8% housing association, slightly below the England figure of 17.1%. Nearly two thirds of homes, 65.4%, are owned outright or on a mortgage.

The age profile tells you a lot about the area. In Suffolk, 23.6% of people are 65 or over against 18.4% for England, and there are fewer 25 to 44 year olds. Expect a settled, older population and neighbours who have often been there a long time.

That settled feel is a plus if you want peace and quiet. It also means swap opportunities in the village come up rarely, so patience helps.
