What it's like to live in Aldridge

Aldridge is mostly owner-occupied territory. Across the Walsall borough, 59.3% of homes are owned, 23.7% are socially rented and 16.3% are privately rented. The social rented share is higher than the England average of 17.1%, so there is a decent amount of social housing in the borough, though it is spread unevenly and Aldridge has plenty of private streets.

Walsall Housing Group is by far the biggest social landlord with over 19,000 homes, followed by GreenSquareAccord, Watmos Community Homes, Amplius Living and Clarion.

Rents are modest. Average weekly social rents in the borough for 2024/25 were about £94 for a one bed, £102 for two beds and £114 for three beds. For context on demand, Walsall's housing register held 3,012 households at 31 March 2025, with 464 homes let through the council that year. A register is not a simple queue, which is one reason a mutual exchange can be a faster route.

Families are well served here. Cooper & Jordan C Of E School is 0.3 miles away, with St Mary of the Angels Catholic Primary and Leighswood School both around half a mile, and Whetstone Field Primary and Radleys Primary a little further. That mix of church, Catholic and community primaries gives real choice within a short walk or drive.

For older children, Aldridge School is just 0.6 miles from the centre. Elmwood School and Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy are under two miles, and Queen Mary's High School is 2.7 miles away. Always check admission criteria and current places, as catchment lines matter more than distance.

Outside school, Aldridge Croft and Anchor Meadow are the closest parks, with Aldridge Acres a little over a mile out. Aldridge Community Centre sits close to the shops and is a useful starting point for local groups and activities.

Aldridge has no railway station, so buses and cars do most of the work. Several stops sit right at the shopping centre, with more at The Avion and on New Road, giving you links towards Walsall town centre and the surrounding areas. If you rely on public transport, check the exact routes and evening times for your daily journey before you commit to a swap.

By car, you are well placed for Walsall, Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield and the wider Midlands road network. Parking around the centre is generally easier than in a big town.

On foot, the centre of Aldridge works well. Shops, the library, pharmacies, gyms and pubs are clustered within a few hundred metres, so if you land somewhere near the middle you may barely need to drive for daily basics. Further out on the estates, walking distances stretch and a bus or car becomes more useful.

For a town this size, Aldridge does well. There is a cinema in the centre, which is rarer than you might think locally, plus the library and the shopping centre a few steps away. Pubs are plentiful and close: The Crown Inn, The Turtles Head, The Avion and the Red Lion are all within half a mile.

If you exercise, you are spoilt. Gymophobics, The Gym Aldridge with 24 hour access, Anytime Fitness and a couple of personal training set-ups all sit within a couple of hundred metres of the centre, so there is competition on price and opening hours.

For green time, Aldridge Croft and Anchor Meadow are on the doorstep, with Stubbers Green Weir under a mile towards Walsall Wood. Late nights out mean heading towards Walsall, where the clubs and bars are around three miles away.

Aldridge sits inside the Walsall borough, where 53.1% of adults are in work, below the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment across the borough is 4.5% against 3.5% nationally, and in August 2026 around 6% of working-age residents were claiming unemployment-related benefits, compared with 4% in England. Those are borough-wide numbers, not Aldridge alone, and parts of the town are noticeably more comfortable than the average.

Locally, work tends to come from the shops and services in and around the centre, schools, health services and the trading and industrial areas on the edges of the town.

Because Aldridge has no station, most commuting is by bus or car. Walsall town centre is roughly three miles away and Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield are all realistic drives. If you are moving for a specific job, time the journey at rush hour first.
