What it's like to live in Bognor Regis

There is a good cluster of primary schools close in. St Mary's RC Primary is about a tenth of a mile away, Edward Bryant School around a third, and South Bersted CofE Primary under a mile. Bersted Green Primary and Nyewood CofE Junior are both roughly a mile out. Always check current places and Ofsted reports directly with the schools.

For family support, Bluebell Lodge Family Hub and Arun West Family Hub (Bersted) are both within a mile, and Bognor Regis Youth and Community Centre is around the same distance. Jeneses Community Centre and Foodbank sits closer to the centre.

Bognor Regis Library is a short walk away, with Willowhale Library a couple of miles out. Across West Sussex, under 16s make up 17.6% of the population, a little below the England figure.

Bognor Regis station is about a third of a mile from the centre, so a walk for most people, and it puts rail travel within easy reach without needing a car first.

Buses are easy to pick up. There are stops along Bognor Regis High Street within a couple of minutes of the shops, plus stops by the station. If you do not drive, this is a town where you can manage, because the centre is compact and flat.

If you do have a car, the retail park and the outer neighbourhoods are a short drive. Parking in the centre is something to check for your specific street before you swap, as is bin and permit arrangements.

The seafront is the obvious draw. The Promenade and Place Saint-Maur are both within a few minutes of the centre, with Hotham Park and Gloucester Road Garden close by for greenery and a bit of shade. Steyne Gardens is a short walk too.

For evenings out, Picturedrome Cinema is near the station, and there is a decent spread of pubs and bars including The William Hardwicke, The Punch and Judy and Rocks Bar and Grill. Later options include Sheiks Night Club and Reds.

On the fitness side, the Laburnum Centre and Gym run by Age UK West Sussex is right in the centre, with smaller independent studios such as Dream Fitness and Lean In 60 under a mile out.

Across West Sussex, 57.8% of adults are in work, just above the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment sits at 2.9% against 3.5% for England. In August 2026, 3.1% of 16 to 64 year olds were claiming unemployment-related benefits, below the England rate of 4%.

In the town itself, the visible employers are the sort you would expect from a seaside town centre: retail, hospitality, care and health services. The University of Chichester has a Learning Resource Centre right in the middle of Bognor Regis, which adds a student presence to the town.

With the station walkable, commuting by train is realistic if your work is elsewhere along the coast or inland.

Social renting is less common here than nationally. Across West Sussex, 12.7% of households rent socially, split between 4.5% council and 8.2% housing association, compared with 17.1% for England. Home ownership is high at 68.5%, with 17.5% privately rented.

That matters for swappers: the pool of social homes is smaller than in many parts of the country, so exchanges can take patience. It is worth casting your net across the wider area rather than one street.

The county skews older than England overall, with 22.8% aged 65 and over against 18.4% nationally, and slightly fewer young adults. Bognor Regis itself has a mix, helped by the university presence in the town centre.
