What it's like to live in Bradford-on-Avon

Homes here are mostly older stone terraces and cottages climbing the hillsides, with newer estates around the edges. Across Wiltshire, 14.5% of homes are social rented, a little below the England average of 17.1%, so social housing is not thick on the ground and swaps matter.

The age profile skews a little older than England, with 21.9% aged 65 and over across the council area. Wiltshire's housing register held 3,999 households at March 2025, and 59 council homes changed hands by mutual exchange that year.

Fitzmaurice Primary School is 0.2 miles from the centre and Christ Church CofE Primary 0.5 miles, with Winsley, Westwood with Iford and Staverton primaries all within two miles. For secondary, The John of Gaunt School is 2.4 miles away and The Clarendon Academy 2.7 miles, both towards Trowbridge.

For getting outdoors there is Westbury Garden, Culver Close Playing Field, The Hall grounds and Poulton Park and Recreation Ground, all within half a mile. Bradford on Avon Library is a couple of minutes from the town centre.

Across the wider Wiltshire council area, 17.8% of residents are under 16, a shade below the England figure, so this is a town with families but not an overwhelmingly young one.

The train station is right in the middle of town, which is the single biggest thing Bradford-on-Avon has going for it. Avoncliff and Freshford stations are a short hop away, and Trowbridge station is about 2.4 miles off.

Buses call at the stop by the railway station, with further stops out towards Holt and the surrounding villages. Services in a town this size are not constant, so check times for the journeys you make most.

On foot, the centre is compact: library, pharmacies, shops and parks are all inside half a mile. By car you are close to Trowbridge for bigger shopping and the cinema. Parking in the old streets is tight, so ask about it before you commit.

Pubs are a big part of town life here: The Three Horseshoes, The Dandy Lion, The Stumble Inn, The Bunch of Grapes and the Bradford-on-Avon Club are all within a few minutes of the centre.

For exercise there are several small independent gyms and studios, including Bodytech Gym and The FIT Studio, rather than one big leisure chain. The Mount Pleasant Centre & Club is the main community venue in town, with more community centres over in Trowbridge.

For a cinema trip you head to Trowbridge, where the ODEON and Parade House are under three miles away, along with The Shires Shopping Centre and The Gateway. Evening nightlife in Bradford-on-Avon itself is pub-based and low-key.

Employment in the wider Wiltshire council area is healthy: 60.2% of adults are in work against 57.4% for England, and unemployment sits at 2.3% compared with 3.5% nationally. Benefit claims among 16 to 64 year olds were 2.3% in August 2026, well under the England figure of 4%.

Locally, work tends to mean small shops, pubs, services and schools, plus commuting. The station makes that commute realistic without a car, which is unusual for a town of this size.

Trowbridge, a couple of miles away, adds shops, health services and offices to the mix.
