What it's like to live in Callington

Families have Callington Primary School right in town, only a couple of hundred metres from the centre. A little further out there is Harrowbarrow School at 2.6 miles and St Mellion V A C of E School at 2.8 miles, both small village schools. Check current Ofsted reports and admissions before you decide.

For younger children there is Zero's Play Zone and Peggy's Patch close by, plus Launceston Road Recreation Ground for running about. Callington Library is an easy walk and useful for reading groups and rainy days.

Cornwall as a whole has slightly fewer under-16s than England, at 16.3% against 18.6%, and a bigger over-65 population. So expect a mixed, older-leaning community rather than a town full of young families.

Callington has no railway station, so a car makes life easier here, particularly for work outside the town or trips further into Cornwall.

That said, the town is walkable. The school, library, pharmacies, supermarket and pubs all sit within about half a mile of the centre, so plenty of errands can be done on foot. There are bus stops in town at New Road, with others at Trefloyd Close and Station Road just over a mile out, linking Callington with nearby places.

If you rely on buses, check the timetables for the routes you would actually need before committing. Rural Cornish services can be less frequent than town-dwellers expect, and evenings and Sundays are often thinner than weekdays.

Kit Hill Country Park, about a mile and a half from town, is the big draw. It is open moorland with wide views and the sort of place you can walk again and again without getting bored. Closer in, Launceston Road Recreation Ground and Peggy's Patch cover everyday fresh air.

For indoor exercise there is decent choice for a town this size: The Zone Callington, Greedy Gainer Gym, RB Fitness, Gymsupport and THE GYM at St. Mellion, all within three miles.

Evenings are pub-based. The Bulls Head, The Old Clink EVOHEX and The Cornish Ancestor Micro Pub are all in town, with The Swingletree just over a mile out. Harrowbarrow & Metherell Village Hall, 2.7 miles away, is the nearest community hall for groups and events.

Across the Cornwall council area, 53.3% of adults are in work, a little below the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment is lower though, at 2.6% against 3.5%, and benefit claimants stood at 3% of 16 to 64 year olds in August 2026, under the England figure of 4%.

Those numbers partly reflect Cornwall's older population: 25.3% are 65 or over, against 18.4% nationally, and fewer people are of working age.

In practice, many Callington residents travel for work. Plymouth is the nearest big employment centre, roughly twelve miles east. If you commute, factor in the drive or the bus, and think about whether your job or hours would still work from here.

Social renting is less common in Cornwall than nationally: 12.8% of homes across the council area are socially rented against 17.1% in England, split between 5.2% council and 7.6% housing association. Two thirds of homes are owned outright or with a mortgage and 19.7% are privately rented, so the social housing stock is a smaller pool.

Average weekly social rents in the council area for 2024/25 were £82 for a one-bed, £94 for a two-bed and £106 for a three-bed.
