What it's like to live in Staplehurst

Staplehurst School is right in the village, barely a few steps from the centre, which is a real practical win on a wet school morning. Frittenden C of E Primary is around 2.2 miles away and Leigh Academy Marden about 2.9 miles, so there is choice within a short drive or bus ride. Older children will travel out of the village for secondary school.

For younger families, the green space is the draw. Surrenden Play Area and Surrenden Field (the King George VI Playing Field) are both a couple of minutes from the centre, with Wimpey Field close by too.

Across the wider Maidstone council area, 19% of residents are under 16, slightly above the England average, so this is a district where families are well represented.

The railway station is about 0.8 miles from the village centre, which makes Staplehurst unusual for a village this size. It puts Maidstone, Tonbridge and London within reach without a car, and Marden station is a couple of miles further on if you need an alternative.

Buses call at stops around Station Approach and the railway station, linking the village with nearby towns. It is worth checking timings for your own journey, as rural services can be thinner in the evenings and on Sundays.

On foot, the village works well. The school, library, pharmacy and Kings Head are all close together, and Sainsbury's is a manageable walk for many. If you drive, the A229 running through the village gives you Maidstone one way and the Weald the other, and parking is generally easier here than in town.

This is a village, so entertainment is local rather than lavish. Staplehurst Library is in the centre and is a useful free base for children's activities and quiet time. Marden Library is a short hop away if you want a change.

The pubs give the village its social life. The Kings Head is on the doorstep, and within a couple of miles you have The Hawkenbury, the Bell & Jorrocks at Frittenden, The Lord Raglan and Balfour Winery for something different.

For exercise, Uplift Studio and The Pilates Barre Company are both close, with BRIGADE and AJP Fitness around three miles out. Dog owners have Lovehurst Paddock Dog Exercise Field nearby. Frittenden Memorial Hall and the Heart of Headcorn community hub host village-scale events within a short drive.

The wider Maidstone council area has a strong employment picture. Around 60.8% of adults are in work, above the England figure of 57.4%, and unemployment sits at 2.7% against 3.5% nationally. Benefit claimants among 16 to 64s were 3.5% in August 2026, below the England rate of 4%.

Staplehurst itself is a commuter village more than a jobs hub. The station is the key asset here: it opens up work in Maidstone, Tonbridge and London without needing a car, which matters if you are weighing up travel costs.

Locally, work tends to be in shops, schools, care, the pubs and the surrounding farms and vineyards. If you work shifts, check the last train and bus times before you commit.

Housing in the Maidstone council area leans heavily towards ownership: 67.4% of homes are owned, 17.3% privately rented and 13.4% social rented, which is below the England figure of 17.1%. Social housing is not abundant here, so swaps are worth chasing when they appear.
