What it's like to live in Camborne

Families have plenty of choice close by. Within half a mile there is St Meriadoc CE Nursery & Infant Academy, Camborne Roman Catholic Junior and Infant School, St John the Baptist Catholic Primary, Weeth School and Trevithick Learning Academy — a rare cluster for a town this size.

For older children, Camborne Science & International Academy is about half a mile away, with Nexus closer still and Nine Maidens Alternative Provision Academy under three miles.

For the rest of family life, Camborne Park and Gerry Park are both within half a mile, and Tuckingmill Valley Park and the Red River Valley give more room to roam just over a mile out. The Baby Den and Camborne Community Centre are near the middle of town, along with Cornwall Deaf Community Centre. Always check catchments and places with the school directly before you commit to a swap.

Camborne station is about a third of a mile from the centre, which is a real plus in Cornwall, where many towns have no train at all. That gives you a link along the main line without needing a car.

Buses are easy to reach too. There are stops and stands in the centre roughly a tenth of a mile out, plus stops by the railway station, and The Square about a mile and a half away. Between the two, getting to Redruth and beyond without driving is realistic.

On foot, the town works well: schools, the library, pharmacies and supermarkets are all within half a mile of the centre. If you do drive, the retail park and the community hospital at around two and a half to three miles are short hops, and the wider county opens up.

Camborne is not short of a pub. The White Hart, Tyacks Hotel, The John Francis Basset and The Waggoners Arms are all in or beside the centre, so a night out need not involve a journey.

If you like training, there is an unusual amount of choice for a town this size: Elite, Pure Functional Fitness, North Coast Fitness, Morva Wellness 24hr Gym and Carbon Fitness are all within about half a mile.

Quieter days are covered by two libraries close to the centre, and by the parks and valley walks. For a film, C Fylm at Redruth is about three miles away, and Pure Gold Discos and The Robartes Arms sit a couple of miles out for later nights. Beyond that, the rest of Cornwall is within reach by train or bus.

Across the Cornwall council area, 53.3% of adults are in work, a little below the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment sits at 2.6%, lower than England's 3.5%, and 3% of 16 to 64 year olds claimed unemployment-related benefits in August 2026, against 4% nationally.

Those numbers together suggest a county where work is available but not always full-time or well paid — a familiar Cornish pattern. It is worth being realistic about hours and seasonal swings before you move.

The train station and bus links matter here. They widen the area you can reasonably commute to without a car, which is a genuine advantage compared with more isolated Cornish villages.

Camborne's housing is mostly older terraced and estate stock, and the wider picture is telling: across Cornwall, 66.2% of homes are owned, 19.7% privately rented and just 12.8% socially rented — below the England figure of 17.1%. Social homes are in demand, so a swap is often the most realistic way to move.

Average weekly social rents in the council area in 2024/25 were £82 for a one-bed, £94 for a two-bed and £106 for a three-bed. Check the actual rent and any service charge on the home you are considering.

The main landlords locally are Cornwall Council, LiveWest, Coastline Housing, Ocean Housing and Westward Housing Group. Cornwall skews older than England, with 25.3% aged 65 and over and 16.3% under 16, so expect a mix of long-settled residents and families.
